I have always loved the New Forest. Growing up, it was the backdrop to lots of childhood holidays, and returning to its ancient woodland always brings back an incredible wave of nostalgia. On a recent escape from the busy coast of Brighton, a group of four of us packed our bags to see if Balmer Lawn Hotel could capture that magical, tranquil feeling I remember so well.
The moment we pulled up to the 19th-century building, it was clear that the hotel would embody the welcoming charm of a heritage hotel. We were greeted with a warm, personal check-in and given a guided tour of the property, and immediately it established a welcoming, homely feel.
Our room was a beautifully appointed nod to traditional style, complete with a classic four-poster bed that felt completely fitting for the former hunting lodge. The real charm for me, however, was in the view. The next morning I woke up at 7:00am, stepped out onto our private balcony with a cup of tea, and watched the New Forest ponies roaming freely just beyond the grounds. As the hotel sits right in the heart of Brockenhurst, the location is an intrinsic part of your stay, and between the landscape and the horses, it really makes you feel like you are in another world entirely.
After settling in, we went to explore the leisure and spa areas. The hotel features an indoor swimming pool and a small outdoor pool. While the pool facilities themselves have been part of the offering for a while, the spa area is new, complete with a salt room and a Finnish sauna. It’s a boutique experience designed to help you unwind, it’s exceptionally clean, and really made us feel relaxed. It is exactly the kind of peaceful space where you are happy to while away an afternoon, completely disconnecting from the outside world.
Dinner was hosted in Beresfords, the hotel's spacious, AA Rosette-awarded restaurant. The space manages a balancing act between country house dining and an inviting, intimate atmosphere.
The culinary style is fine dining, focusing on smaller plates that are beautifully presented. I started with a spectacular pork belly dish, followed by an amazing beef main course. The staff were charming and incredibly helpful, and everything was so satisfying that I didn't even have space for dessert, just a perfect glass of wine to nurse through the evening.
We also noticed that they have an outdoor pizza oven setup ready for the summer months, alongside a gorgeous covered area that’s lovely to sit in and look out over the landscape. For chillier days, they have heaters set up so you can enjoy the views all year round.
Balmer Lawn Hotel is a charming escape for anyone looking to really wind down and unplug. It caters beautifully to a more tranquil stay, maybe with a small group of friends, as well as couples seeking a peaceful, slow-paced retreat. If we had been here longer I would definitely have spent time going for long walks in the surrounding area.
From the extensive buffet breakfast in the morning to the chance to sit and watch the horses on the lawn, it is a place designed for quiet and calm. If you want a comforting mix of heritage, award-winning dining, and time spent in nature, this is a hidden, New Forest refuge.
