Spa days are often seen as a bit of a female prerogative, but with professional sportsmen emerging as spa fans to help heal their aching limbs, an increasing number of men are getting in on the action, and the Spabreaks.com team are of course, leading the way. So we sent six of our boys to be primed and pampered at Crown Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes.
Who Went? Team Leader Lang Rynajh and Sales Consultants – Aiden Purvs, Michael Sweeney, Joseph Odesesan, David Riselli, and Patrick Ukety.
Michael: “We stayed in the Club Rooms, which have modern interiors and stylised bathrooms which are a bit of a feature. The double rooms are particularly good, especially as we were a group because they are spacious and have two double beds, so if you are happy to share then you can easily fit four of you in a room!”
Lang: “There are three indoor tennis courts, and several outdoors as well as the golf course, so as a group of boys it was a great venue because there was a lot to do, and it wasn’t just us who thought so – while we were there, the Swindon football team were staying as well!”
Lang: “The spa is brilliant. They have a swimming pool, sauna and steam room which are quite small – although that may have just been because there were six of us! The therapists are great, and there are three four-poster beds in an enormous relaxation room that you can go and doze on after your treatments, which is a really nice touch. I had a facial, which included a scalp massage – and having been up late the night before I literally just drifted off as soon as the therapist got to work! Most of the other boys had massages, and Patrick was really impressed – he does a lot of sport and wanted a really intense massage to get rid of all the knots in his back – the therapists there are great at tailoring the treatment for you!”
Michael: “You can either eat in the main restaurant where there is an a la carte menu or a buffet, or you can go to the seafood restaurant. Guests are given £20 per person towards their meal, while the buffet is included.”
Lang: “It is great for anyone with a good appetite because to be honest, at the buffet you could probably fill up on your starter!”
Michael: “The hotel is pretty remote, which makes it a great place to simply relax as there is nothing around it to make it too noisy – so enjoy the golf course, tennis courts and spa, and take a book to sit by the pool. It is a £20 taxi or so to get into the town if you are looking to go out in the evening, but I think it is best to enjoy the venue itself as it has everything you need!
What’s the Verdict
Lang: “It’s a great place to go for a bit of everything – spend sometime in the spa, have some treatments, play some sport and enjoy a good meal and a couple of drinks. It works well for a group of guys because of the activities, and would be great for couples as well, and of course it’s good for a group of girls! I think it’s ideal for a one night break – get the most out of your day and completely relax!”
The Boys’ Top Tips
– If you are having a massage, don’t be afraid to ask for more pressure – the staff are very good at deep tissue massage, which is particularly good if you play a lot of sport.
– Opt for a treatment that’s at least an hour – you need that time to relax properly.
– As the location is so remote, use your spa day as an opportunity to eliminate all other distractions and dissociate from your busy life – which basically means no emails!
