There are an awful lot of fads out there claiming to help you lose weight – it is a sign of our willingness to try anything that contributes to their proliferation – if someone only eating raspberries for a month lost half their body weight, but also happened to be spending Tuesday mornings standing on their heads, you would probably find the head stand became a new weight loss miracle option.
The fact of the matter is, our bodies are complicated structures so there are lots of factors that contribute to our health, weight and fitness, but it goes without saying that the size of your appetite is pretty key.
The idea that your sense of smell can contribute to weight loss has
been floating about in the ether for some time caught somewhere between total non-believers and those envisaging the literal vaporising of muffin-tops with the mere sniff of a sticky toffee pudding with custard.
Well suffice to say it doesn’t work like that, but there is something in the theory. Unsurprisingly smell and appetite are closely connected – you just need to walk past a half decent loaf of bread in the process of baking to know that, but in the same way that smell might make you salivate, it can also trigger feelings of fullness, and certain smells are particularly good at stimulating the part of the brain that controls that sense of satiation – thus limiting the amount you want to eat.
Particularly adept at triggering this reaction are citrus smells, the most effective being grapefruit, although bergamot, cumin, dill, fennel, ginger, lemon, patchouli, peppermint, sandalwood, spearmint, vanilla and Ylang-ylang are also reputedly beneficial – so smelling the appropriate essential oils should help reduce your appetite, the default long term result being weight loss.
Perhaps more interestingly to many, and certainly extremely apt for this month of detox, citrus oils are also said to stimulate the lymphatic system, which is the body’s way of removing toxins from the body, which will explain their presence in detox aromatherapy treatments provided by the likes of ESPA and Aromatherapy Associates at venues including Columbia Beach Resort and The Vale Resort, where oils are applied to the body in the form of massages and treatments – which has to be a much more satisfying way of suppressing ones appetite than sitting there sniffing an orange whilst thinking about cheesecake.
