Family friendly and less than an hour from London, The Hampshire Court Hotel in Basingstoke has an array of leisure facilities to while away the day … so we went along to put them to the test!
Who went? Team Leader, Lang Rynjah; Sales Consultants Christie Marnoch, Davide Riselli, Jade Hartley, Amy Larner and Editor, Bonnie Friend.
It can be pretty tricky for a venue to cater to groups of guests – so many people to please, but the promise of multiple tennis courts and swimming pools meant that even before heading to Basingstoke we were making plans for competitive matches … with several members of the group opting to stay for an additional night!
Built around a newly designed courtyard, the 90 rooms at The Hampshire Court Hotel range from standard double and twin rooms to superior rooms and Q Star Rooms which have enough space for fold out beds and the most enormous bathrooms you could possibly ask for. Being a group and family-friendly venue, there are also options for interconnecting doors. The interiors comprise dark wood and an abundance of natural light – happily our balcony looked out over the aforementioned courtyard, and if you get the chance I highly recommend opting for the same as it’s a really rather pleasant vista.
The emphasis at The Hampshire Court Hotel is very much on leisure facilities for all. There are five indoor and two outdoor tennis courts, a gym, sauna, steam room, and two swimming pools – one for the little ones, and one for adults only. There are also six treatment rooms, where therapists use ESPA products in a range of treatments including facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, and notably their Lava Shell massage, which myself and the team sampled and can highly recommend – more on that later in the week.
There is a main dining area for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which, in keeping with the rest of the hotel welcomes children. You place your order earlier in the day which means you can sit down and simply await its arrival – and proving that they cater to fussy customers such as myself, they were extremely accommodating when it came to swapping the chips that came with my amply proportioned, spicy salmon fillet for steamed vegetables. In addition to the main restaurant, there is the Brasserie bar which offers coffees, teas, drinks and light bites – it’s an entirely casual environment with a large plasma screen TV in a light and airy space accented with primary colours overlooking the omnipresent courtyard.
Moments from the M4, Hampshire Court is situated between the market towns of Newbury and Basingstoke, which the team soon discovered to have a surprisingly vibrant nightlife only a £5 taxi from the hotel itself. Suffice to say, the venue is easily accessible, and only a short distance from many of the local attractions in the near vicinity – namely Aldershot Military Museum, Calshot Castle and Marwell Wildlife park.
The Hampshire Court Hotel’s expertise definitely lies in its ‘nothing is too much trouble’ attitude and family friendly facilities, while the large rooms and interconnecting doors mean that groups can essentially create their own little apartment in the hotel.
– If you’re a sports fan – get your trainers and shorts out – the tennis courts are excellent and abundant.
– Have an early lunch – it’s a buffet and it’s popular!
– As the spa is just down the corridor from the rooms you can head over in your dressing gown and slippers, but if you are not staying overnight or want to take your paraperhalia with you then remember to take a pound coin for the locker room!
