I smell glorious … no really, if I didn’t have to come into work today I could have happily passed the morning sniffing my own shoulder … I have been living the indulgent and deliciously scented Rituals Ayurvedic lifestyle – a pink-packaged homage to ancient medicinal principles.
To put this into context, Rituals is a brand whose karmic philosophy is built around the notion of turning life’s everyday tasks into enjoyable rituals. Producing everything from loungewear to bath products, teas to candles and even washing-up liquid … all of which generate the heady perfume of natural ingredients – at least in the context of my daily ablutions, I can attest to the fact that bath time has fast become my favourite part of the day.
The Ayurvedic collection focuses on two main ingredients – Indian Rose and Holy Basil (not just any old basil here) … the products range from the every day to more time consuming treats. Most accessible to my mind, and thus ideal when you are short of time or simply easing yourself into the Rituals philosophy are the Yogi Flow foaming shower gel, which lathers up like shaving foam as it hits the water in a childishly pleasing manner; and the utterly indulgent, but easily absorbed Shanti Chakra body oil, which can be used as a massage oil when you have a bit more time, but is a very effective body moisturiser if you’re on the go.
Of course, true to its name, the range of products is designed with a rather more decadent ceremony in mind, and this is where the Himalaya Clay, Honey Harmony bath oil and Yogi Secret foot scrub come in. The clay is a bit of a home detox – or your very own mud rasul if you like – massage it into the skin and soak for a while, perhaps while rubbing a little of the Yogi Secret food scrub into your long-suffering soles … imbued with Holy Basil and mint it is instantly cooling and sends a wave of perfume throughout the bathroom. Meanwhile Honey Harmony is a concept we are all familiar with – pour in bath and soak – sweet scented and made from Himalaya Honey and Indian Rose scents unlike most bath products it actually goes a long way towards countering the drying effects of changing temperatures, and central heating.
Of course if you really want to make it a head-to-toe experience, there is also a shampoo to match … and a whole host of scrubs, sprays and candles as well. The really lovely thing about the Rituals brand and concept however, is that whether you are spending a long or short time over it, it does exactly what it promises – it turns everyday habits and chores into a feature of the day and something that you can really enjoy without it becoming a hassle. It provides a little luxury without the price giving you a minor coronary, and as I say you smell wonderful for the rest of the day as well … which is something everyone can be grateful for!
