‘Small and perfectly formed’ has never been a more apt phrase than in the context of the spa at The Montcalm … and of the hotel itself … ‘boutique’, ‘luxury’ and ‘contemporary’ should give a pretty good idea of what’s in store …
There are 143 rooms at The Montcalm, all displaying the characteristic, streamlined grandeur that contrasts with the Edwardian terrace exterior. Thanks so some careful planning when it comes to the use of space the venue feels spacious and calm – a complete juxtaposition to the outside world; and proving the devil is in the detail, guests can even select what scent they want in their room before they arrive!
The spa is where the use of space really starts to show off – head down to a subterranean level and there is a gym, exercise pool (which is small, but has a current in it which allows you to get a proper aquatic workout), Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, monsoon shower, heated loungers and three treatment rooms including a double room where oversized treatment beds make for some seriously comfortable pampering. Treatments use results driven CARITA products and British brand Elemis, and are given a Montcalm twist that makes them unique to the venue.
Completing the set up are two restaurants both leading off the high-ceilinged foyer. The Crescent serves all meals with everything from Middle Eastern mezza platters to afternoon tea. There is also Grill Restaurant – no prizes for guessing what is on offer there – providing a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere for such a sophisticated venue, and of course, The Montcalm bar for cocktails.
Be careful not to fall over Marble Arch on your way here – it is literally a stone’s throw from the tube station, not to mention the shopping and tourism of Knightsbridge and Oxford Street … happily however, given it’s careful positioning on a crescent that Henry Higgins would be proud of, it is also calm, serene and very much deserving of the ‘retreat’ moniker.
The hotel is undoubtedly five star in terms of design, service, style and location, and the spa in particular is proof that size really doesn’t matter. Given its location, what makes the spa a particular favourite amongst high profile customers is its discretion and accessibility – on a quiet crescent sheltered from the metropolis it is easily accessible but utterly private.
– Don’t let the size of the pool put you off if you want a work out before you relax – it is small, but designed for exercise!
– Thanks to the central location it is a good idea to combine your break with some of the other things London has to offer – a post-shopping treat or a pre-theatre pamper perhaps?
– The intimate environment and of course, that double treatment room make The Montcalm an excellent venue for couples.
