It is no great surprise that Grayshott Spa Hotel has such a glorious reputation, welcoming the good and the great for the quintessential health retreat over the past 50 years – without mincing our words, it is beautiful.
Once the home of Poet Laureate, Lord Alfred Tennyson the main house has been extended to include more contemporary rooms. The benefit of staying in the original building is that rooms are elegant without being ostentatious – if Downton Abbey did spa breaks you might well be given a room like this one; while newer additions benefit from marginally closer proximity to the spa facilities, and if you are on the ground floor – a terrace space as well. Wherever you are you will get a glimpse of the surrounding gardens which are equally as important to the health ethos and character of the retreat as the spa and treatments.
The hotel and the spa are one and the same – you come here to enjoy them in conjunction with one another. The fact that the hotel has a modest 59 bedrooms and the spa has a rather decadent 36 treatment rooms gives an idea of the level of individual attention that is paid to guests when you are here. This isn’t just a spa, it is a full body MOT with all the trimmings. There is a gym, fitness classes, yoga, tennis and personal trainers on hand to advise, a spa area with sauna, steam room and plunge pool, an indoor pool next to a hydrotherapy pool and a heated outdoor pool, which needs nothing more than its location to recommend it. Treatments range from those which are simply enjoyable to those with diagnostic elements and specialised training thanks to the staff who are trained in specialities such as cranial osteopathy, Reiki, acupuncture and Alexander Technique. They also offer specialised programmes for weightloss, insomnia, menopause and general burnout, bringing into focus the point that this is a spa in the true sense of the word.
Grayshott is all about health, and this extends in no small matter to your food. The restaurant advises on calories, and portion sizes, extolling the virtues of the motto – ‘breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper’. With this in mind, breakfast and lunch are in buffet form with recommended divisions on your plate for proteins, vegetables and carbohydrates; while dinner is from an a la carte daily menu. What is exciting about the food however is that in terms of taste you would be hard to find anything better, proving that to be healthy doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on flavour. Fruit and teas are available throughout the day if you get a little peckish, and Bubbles Bar is also open for teas or a drink after dinner.
Adjoining the heath of Hindenhead Common in Surrey, Grayshott Spa Hotel is surrounded by 47 acres of private gardens which includes it own nine-hole golf course; and backs onto an additional 700 acres of National Trust land – so scenic views are not in short supply. More to the point, there is ample opportunity to explore the great outdoors, whether its from your lounger, on foot, or borrowing a bicycle.
Grayshott is not about high-tech facilities, it is about combining a very elegant environment with some serious health and fitness knowledge and putting it all together in a very pretty package. It is all about feeling better when you leave and laying the foundations for long term health, making it the perfect environment for a healthy lifestyle kick-start or for someone needing to really recharge from modern life. They are true to the motto on the door – ‘Peace on arrival. Health on departure.”
– In the evenings Grayshott provides educational talks or favourite films in the cinema area – a great way to get those extra tools to continue your ‘body is a temple’ lifestyle when you get home, or simply to exercise a few of those creative cerebral muscles.
– If the weather is nice take a dip in the outside pool – it is heated to an extremely comfortable temperature, and open from 7am … in the early morning the mist rises off it making for a setting that is movie worthy.
– Take a walk/run/bike ride around the National Trust grounds – you will feel a world away from anywhere … but get a map from reception otherwise you might find you are inadvertently heading to Narnia without a wardrobe home.
