Spotlight On … Lingfield Park Marriott

First Impressions

Having battled against the perilous M25 to get there – I cannot explain the flood of relief upon seeing the discreet driveway appear on the side of a country road, leading up to the ultra contemporary, streamlined building that is the Lingfield Park Marriott.

The Hotel

An open space where the overriding characteristic is natural light, the hotel has all the trademark characteristics of the Marriott brand – that is to say a high standard of customer service, and all the necessary conveniences to suit the 21st Century traveller.  Rooms are large and accented by bright soft furnishings, and if you are on the side of the hotel that overlooks the racecourse for which the hotel is named, then thanks to a floor-to-ceiling window, not only are you looking out onto it, one wrong foot and you would be participating in the next race.

The Spa

Small and neatly formed, the Breathe Spa and Health Club at Lingfield Park is immediately to your right as you enter the building and in keeping with the flexibility of the venue as a whole offers something for all guests.  There is a gym as well as a swimming pool which manages to straddle the line between being an exercise pool as well as a place to simply bask in the water.  The hot tub is built into the pool space so if you are visiting as a group, while one person is doing lengths others can sit back and relax while still essentially spending time together.  There is also a sauna, steam room and ice fountain to get the full thermal experience, and naturally there are four treatment rooms using products from Babor, a natural brand channelling the essences of Africa, Asia and Brazil through its products and ingredients.

The Restaurant

The Cyprium Bar & Grill is a seamless addition to the open plan space on the ground floor and like everywhere else in the hotel overlooks the golf course and race course – depending where you sit – thanks to the entirely glass, curved wall that shapes the space.  There is also a small private dining area which seats up to eight people – you can still see out to watch the world go by, but you have the added benefit of your own space which is ideal for small groups of guests or special occasions.

The Location

As the name implies, the hotel is located not near, but on Lingfield racecourse, and as such the surrounding views are of a well manicured, but nonetheless verdant landscape.  The hotel is also surrounded by its own 18-hole golf course complete with driving range, lessons and putting green – all of which extend the views and the greenery that much further … all that whilst only being a short drive off the M25, which makes it remarkably accessible by car (traffic dependent obviously).

The Verdict

One of the nicest things about Lingfield Park Marriott is that however attentive the service, the atmosphere is relaxed and bubbly – something never more evident than in the variety of guests that visit – ranging from keen golfers, to families and groups.  It is thanks to the atmosphere and adaptability in terms of the menu and activities that it has such a sweeping appeal.

Top Tips

– If your visiting as a group – book dinner in the private dining room to add that extra sense of occasion.

– Whichever way it affects you – bear in mind that there are children’s swimming times before 11am and after 3pm, and adults only are allowed in the pool in-between.

– Upgrade your room to a Superior Guestroom with a racecourse view – it forms the basis of the hotel’s character and will either prove scenic or entertaining depending on when you visit!
