My first thought on arriving at Macdonald Manchester was that I should have taken the train because although there is parking, the hotel is literally over the road from the station, and it probably would have made things even easier – ten points to Macdonald Manchester for convenience!
While all Macdonald hotels are utterly modern in terms of facilities and design, this probably features among the most contemporary of the lot. A giant cube of a building, there is an open-plan reception area leading into the bar, and when it comes to the rooms – rising up high above the city skyline – windows make up one entire wall – which in our case meant being greeted by a flood of winter sunlight. Teas, coffees and so forth are ready and waiting to be made at your convenience, and space, space and more space appears to be the motto by which the hotel abides. Perhaps our favourite thing however wasn’t the design, the central location, or the natural light, but the impossibly helpful attitude of all the staff who proved to be the embodiment of ‘service with a smile’.
The spa is definitely more about relaxation than working out – there is a gym but there isn’t a pool. The thermal suite is mood-lit and includes a rock sauna, infra-red sauna, aroma steam room, ice fountain, sensation shower, drench shower and heated loungers – which personally I would spend a little time in before heading to the treatment area – which is the ultimate jewel in the hotel’s crown. Complete with a huge relaxation area peppered with hints of Eastern design, the spa uses the Macdonald brand’s signature product preference – Decléor which as any spa goer will know, is a choice with which you just can’t lose on the pampering front.
Thanks to its location, anyone wanting to explore Manchester’s collection of eateries can do so by simply falling out of the front doors – there really is no need if you would rather stay put however – the hotel’s restaurant once again looks out onto that ever-present skyline from its position on the first floor, it is open for all meals which at breakfast is in the form of both a hot and cold buffet, and at other times of the day provides a variety of choices with dinner served from 7.30pm onwards.
The hotel is evidently a favourite amongst business travellers, and no doubt that it because on one side you have the train station, and otherwise it sits in the middle of the one way system that leads into the city – so really, whatever your reason for being in Manchester, you would be hard pushed to find a better situated base.
The location and the helpful attitude of the staff which makes every part of your trip so wonderfully easy, contribute to Macdonald Manchester Hotel’s ranking as an ideal bolthole for anyone looking to explore the city with the added luxury of a little pampering thrown in at the end of the day!
– If you are here on a group getaway and are planning a night out, this is definitely the hotel to stay at!
– Have a treatment – go on, you deserve it!
