Why it works … Thalgo Marine Wrap

Bringing a little bit of the surrounding natural world into the spa, Christchurch Harbour Hotel works with marine algae based brand, Thalgo, and explains why their Marine Wrap is everything you need to soothe the skin, boost circulation, and start the detoxification process …

What exactly is the Thalgo Marine Wrap?

It’s a 55-minute, full body wrap involving an introductory massage focusing on pressure points on the back and legs, to familiarise the client with the therapist.  We then do a full body scrub before applying a plasma gel made from the finest type of Micro Marine Algae, which is cooling and helps the algae mud that is then applied to be absorbed into the skin.  You are then wrapped in a foil wrap, which is warming, and while the products are working we give clients a scalp massage.  The client then showers, and we finish with a full body moisturise, to lock in the products which continue to work throughout the day.

Where does it come from?

It is from the Thalgo product line, which is a marine based brand, perfect for us as we are by the sea.  The algae that the products contain is very good for the body; there are thousands of types, and we are always finding new combinations that work with the body in different ways.

What is it supposed to do?

It stimulates micro circulation, evens out the skin tone, and the plasma has a healing effect, so it’s very good for eczema and psoriasis.  The mud also acts as a muscle relaxant, so it’s great for aches and tension in the muscles.  It is detoxifying, balances the body, cleanses the skin, and leaves it noticeably brighter.  It can also be extremely beneficial for slimming and to reduce water retention.

Is there anything you do to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment?

We can add a detox facial which guests can enjoy while the wrap is working, and has an exfoliating and brightening effect on the skin.  We also offer Detox Discovery kits that retail around £20, so you can continue the experience at home.

Is there anything you recommend clients to do pre or post-treatment to get the most out of it?

Drink plenty of water.  The more you drink, the more it will help the treatment to have a greater effect, and the sooner you will see the benefits as it adds to the detox.  If you are having the treatment for slimming purposes, then we recommend having a course, and it is best to combine it with a healthy diet and exercise.

Is there anyone you particularly recommend the treatment for?

Women really like it to help reduce water retention, as even slim people can struggle.  It’s also very good for sensitive skin conditions and people who are usually worried about having a treatment because of that.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have this treatment and why?

Because of the algae content, it isn’t suitable for anyone with iodine or shellfish allergies.
