For many, she was one of the shining stars of London 2012, but all that presenting can take its toll on a girl … We find out about looking and feeling your best in the hectic world of Clare Balding!
What is your average day like?
There is no such thing as an ‘average’ day for me. I may be presenting racing for Channel 4 or writing a column or waking up early for Good Morning Sunday on Radio 2. Whatever the day it is sure to be incredibly busy and walking the dog will usually be a part of it.
For lots of people, you were the shining star of London 2012, and you seemed to really enjoy it – what was your favourite bit? (If you can pick one!)
There were so many wonderful moments … perhaps one of the highpoints for me was presenting the flowers at one of the medal ceremonies in the stadium at the Paralympics. The reception from the crowd completely took me by surprise and really touched me.
It looked like you had a lot of fun, but you also had an incredibly busy year, did you have time for a bit of a break as well?
Yes, Alice and I managed to get a break in Arizona in November. The weather was fabulous and we were able to ride, play golf and spend time together.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The enormous variety, and the incredible people that I have had the honour to meet and interview.
What’s your idea of the perfect day of relaxation?
A walk with the dog, followed by an afternoon reading the papers, and dinner with good friends.
Do you and Alice get the chance to go on a spa day very often?
Once or twice a year we will go on a mini spa break and we always hunt out the spa at the hotel when we are on holiday.
Do you have a favourite spa treatment or one you would like to try?
I like a relaxing massage. My shoulders get tense so I like to concentrate on those. I have to be careful with feet because I am very ticklish
When do you feel at your most confident?
When I know that I have prepared as well as possibly can.
When do you feel at your most glamorous?
At the Prix de L’arc de Triumph in Paris. It is the most glamorous event in the racing calendar and the French really know how to make the most of the occasion.
Is there a particular beauty product you can’t go on screen without?
Powder… it’s probably the most important product for anyone on television. Without it you would shine like a billiard ball!
Top tip for looking and feeling your best when you have a hectic schedule?
I like to take my own mini pillow with me so that wherever I am staying I have a chance of getting a good night’s sleep.
