From their tea estates in the Livingstonia Mountains of Southern Tanzania, to their boutique on London’s exclusive Burlington Arcade, Luponde tea experts explain why tea is so much more than an enjoyable break in the day!
Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water, and the British drink about 165 million cups daily. Given this vast number it is extremely important to know where your tea has come from and that you are drinking the best possible leaves available to you.
The Luponde Tea Estate is one of the oldest organic tea estates in the world and the climate is perfect for growing tender leaves and flowers. The tea leaves and flowers are handpicked, bringing you the highest quality single estate teas. The estate is situated in the Livingstonia Mountains in Southern Tanzania at an altitude of 7,000 feet, and has been Fairtrade certified since 1994, Rainforest Alliance certified since 2012, and is also Kosher certified. Lots of customers are surprised to hear that Tanzania is such a large producer of tea, but once you try it you will see that it certainly produces some of the finest you will have ever had. Tanzania is currently the 4th largest tea producer in Africa producing about 32,000 tonnes per annum, which constitutes 1% of the world tea production.
The Luponde store opened its doors on the Burlington Arcade five years ago, and is the only place you can buy this particular brand of the drink. The ethical side to the business is so important to us that we have collaborated with our team at the estate to cultivate some of the disused areas back to indigenous forest by planting 30,000 new trees. Our aspiration is to counterbalance the use of paper and card used for gift wrapping.
Aside from anything else, we, like many others, are convinced that the only solution to any everyday woe is a good old cup of tea! We have certainly put the world to rights over numerous cups in our office and we like to think that we and millions of others will continue to do so for years to come.
That said, different teas have their own individual health benefits as well, helping to contribute to a healthy lifestyle:
Orthodox Black Tea: This can help strengthen the immune system and fight off those pesky colds and flu. It has also been known to aid asthma sufferers by expanding the airways.
Green Tea: This is full of antioxidants which makes it an extremely healthy drink. Some research has shown that green tea drinkers have lower chances of developing heart disease and some cancers. As well as this, green tea has been known to increase your metabolic rate, which can aid weight loss.
White Tea: This is also a natural source of antioxidants but it can also help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Our white tea is far and away the healthiest out of our range of teas.
Peppermint: This is very kind to the digestive system and therefore makes it a perfect after dinner drink. For any stomach aches and pains peppermint will help in soothing discomfort. It is also caffeine free.
Camomile: This is a wonderful drink to calm and relax you during or after a long stressful day as it is caffeine free. It makes a great bed time drink and will help you drift off to sleep.
Lemon Verbena: This is another of our caffeine free infusions and therefore makes it a perfect drink to help calm your nerves. It has also been known to help reduce a fever and soothe persistent coughs.
Whatever you need to aid you in a healthy lifestyle you can be confident that the cup of tea you choose is benefiting you in some way. The biscuits you dunk in it may not be so healthy, but one or two every now and then can’t hurt! Top tip: With summer showing signs of arriving, and long, hot days and evenings approaching why not turn your cuppa into an iced tea? We would highly recommend our black tea with some crushed ice and lemon or our lemon verbena chilled with a dash of ginger!
