Spabreaks.com’s partner charity, Pump Aid, are heading into the Autumn with big plans to expand their work for safe drinking water in sub-Saharan Africa, here they tell us what they have been up to so far this year!
The dry season is the busiest time of year for staff at Pump Aid in Malawi. This is when water tables are at their lowest in rural areas and the installation of Elephant Pumps can begin. We set ourselves a challenging target this year – to install 360 new Elephant Pumps in rural communities.
Work has been underway since April and so far we have installed 34 Elephant Pumps, which now provide clean, safe drinking water to over 600 households in the Traditional Authority of Mkanda. The installations have not been without their challenges, as water tables have remained high at the beginning of the dry season, making the well preparation process slow. However, our team in Malawi has been able to find fast and efficient solutions, by using a water pump to drain out the dirty water from the wells and allow digging to proceed. With the valued help and labour from members of the local communities we have been able to continue installing Elephant Pumps, overcoming the difficult conditions.
Innocent Chikwakwa is one of our senior pump builders and one of the longest serving members of our team in Malawi. When we asked what Pump Aid means to him he replied, ‘It is a very special feeling to bring dignity and happiness to poor people, who without Pump Aid would not have clean water.’
As we continue into the dry season we are steadily making progress towards our target of installing 360 new pumps this year. With the motivation to provide clean water and the incredible support we have received from all of our wonderful supporters so far, we believe our target is achievable.
