A classic treatment that requires some specialist expertise, La Manga Club explains why Thai massage in their spa really is worth the trip …
What exactly is Thai Massage?
At La Manga Club it’s a one hour and 15 minute treatment using traditional techniques. Thai massage is usually done without any oils and it works on meridians and pressure points to reduce stress and tension across the mind and body. It includes stretching and pressing on the fingers, toes, and ears.
Where does it come from?
It is from Thailand, and we have two therapists who have come especially from there – it makes such a difference because they really know the balance and the steps that you have to do in the massage; it is part of the way of life and more instinctive than it is if you have just learned techniques.
What is it supposed to do?
It’s relaxing, relieves stress, aids Detox, increases circulation, and you generally feel better when you have finished and are able to forget everything. It’s different to other massages because it works on the mind and body rather than just the body which most other massages address.
Is there anything you do to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment?
For the Royal massage we add in specific oils from Thailand. Lemon is a favourite as it increases circulation and helps with detoxification. There is also a 60 minute version, or a foot massage and we have a dual room for couples to have the Thai massage together.
Is there anything you recommend clients to do pre or post-treatment to get the most out of it?
We always recommend people come and use the spa facilities beforehand, ideally for an hour or so, and then finish your day with the massage. Afterwards we advise having one of our herbal teas and relaxing for a while.
Is there anyone you particularly recommend the treatment for?
It’s for everybody from age 20 upwards. It can be a little bit painful at the beginning if you are very stressed because of the attention to the pressure points that have to be worked for it to work.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t have this treatment and why?
It’s fine for most people, but it is advisable to tell your therapist beforehand if you are pregnant or if you have any medical conditions or allergies. It isn’t suitable for anyone with cancer however.
