Spotlight On … Oulton Hall

Close enough to Leeds for a spot of retail therapy but far enough away from the rest of the world to feel like the spa equivalent of Narnia; we went to visit Oulton Hall!

First Impressions

On a sunny day in Yorkshire I headed to the fairytale destination of Oulton Hall, arriving via the tree-lined roads that seemed completely magical in the dappled light, and made for the perfect introduction to the 18th century estate.  The spa itself has a separate entrance to the hotel, and in keeping with the theme, was almost like entering into the secret garden.

The Hotel

The first thing that strikes you about this hotel is just how romantic it all seems - whether it’s the quintessentially English old building or the grand piano present while you have afternoon tea, I am not entirely sure, but it is the sort of place that feels like Christmas all year round.  Alongside the sense of tradition, all of the rooms have been renovated very recently and as such are sympathetically modern.  Upgraded rooms include lots of extra little features such as a Starbucks’ coffee-maker and ESPA toiletries.

The Spa

When you walk into the spa you are greeted by the pool and the gym which is a really generous size.  There is a café area for lunch so you can stay in your robe all day without having to change, and a sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi.  The relaxation area is dark purple with mood lighting, light duvets, and silk curtains creating semi-private spaces, and amongst the nine treatment rooms there is a double room and a VIP suite with its own steam room and Jacuzzi big enough for two!  Robes, towels, and slippers are all included.

The Restaurant

The overriding feature in the main restaurant, the Calverley Grill, is that it is red and black throughout.  For groups it is brilliant because there is a huge semi-private dining area at the back where you have the benefit of your own space while still having the atmosphere of being in the restaurant.  There are also other large tables throughout the main area, and there is a drawing room for afternoon tea.  The Claret Jug is available for lighter bites, and there is The Champagne Bar … which doesn’t really need much explanation.

The Location

Oulton Hall is five minutes from Leeds, so while you don’t feel like you’re close to anything when you drive up, it is near enough for a day of shopping and visiting the attractions.

The Verdict

It is a very romantic place to go but at the same time it is great for groups who are guaranteed to be well looked after!  It’s also really nice for mums and daughters - just in case you’re thinking of treating her for Mother’s Day!

Top Tips

-          If it’s a special occasion, book the VIP treatment room.
