Upcycling, recycling, and seeing everything in a beautiful new light, Hannah Cowie, just one of the names behind Bristol-based Bimblot, explains why they are the #NextBigThing …
Where did the idea for Bimblot come from?
It is all about bringing John’s (my husband) love of carpentry and furniture-making and my love of textiles together with our shared passion for beautiful things from the past. Just when we first got together we were on a date and missed the last tram home in Montpellier, we had to walk the whole way across the city and found some treasures. We just had to re-home these unwanted goodies and have never stopped since
What makes it different to other vintage shops?
Everything we sell is French! Our rule is we only sell things we love and would like to have in our house. John and I have got quite different styles but the the mix of the two works really well together.
Each item that comes to you must have an interesting story; do you have a favourite piece and why?
Some of the stories are too weird and wonderful that I can’t share them with you. The best things turn up in the most extraordinary places!
Who’s your role model?
There are loads of inspirations! Mark and Sally Bailey from Bailey’s home, Joss Graham ethnographic textiles and works of art, who I used to work for. Richard and Cosmo Wise in Spitalfields . John is French so his hero is Serge Gainsbourg, of course!
Who makes you smile?
Our mischievous daughter Luna.
Who would play you in a movie?
Helena Bonham Carter and Wall-E.
What’s the biggest lesson you have learned so far?
Stay calm, be patient, and keep going! Doing what you love always pays off.
What do you do to relax?
I do yoga and swim in icy cold water, and John will have a long bath with a good book.
We encourage everyone to do one thing each week to be kind to themselves, what are you going to do this week to #bekindtoyou?
Read the newspaper in bed with a cup of tea on Saturday morning! Bliss!
