There cannot be anything quite as counterintuitive as washing your face with oil. Still psychologically damaged from an adolescence (that seemed to permeate into my twenties as well) haunted by problematic skin, the idea is frankly terrifying (a sentiment that I appreciate probably embodies the phrase ‘first world problems’).
Nonetheless, confronted by Sanctuary Spa’s Ultimate Facial Cleansing Oil , I wasn’t going to let a little trepidation get in my way because this is a brand that I have periodically declared undying love to and the chance to try something else from their ranks is not one to pass up.
You apply the oil directly to dry skin using your fingertips, and massage it in until evenly covered. Then you add a few drops of water and continue to massage your face so that it emulsifies. Then rinse, and if you have the time, repeat for a particularly deep cleanse.
Unsurprisingly it does leave your skin feeling as though you have just put oil on it rather than that squeaky clean soapiness that most cleansers provide, so for my personal sense of satisfaction I did use a muslin cloth with the last rinse to remove any excess. What surprised me however, was that alongside the feeling of deep hydration, my skin felt glowingly clean and remarkably healthy.
Over the coming days I fully expected an accumulation of invisible London grime, make-up, and general dirt to dispel the healthy glow and replace it with an outbreak of spots, but spectacularly my skin seemed to be happier than ever. Pores shrank, dry skin patches faded away, and extending my daily Sanctuary Spa facial routine, it was only enhanced by a bi-weekly application of their Radiance Exfoliator (cue glorious citrus scents reminiscent of summers in the Mediterranean), and a post-cleanse application of their Lipid Recovery Facial Oil . Although they recommend the facial oil to be applied before a moisturiser, I have found that for me it works instead of a moisturiser as well.
There are two things I always look for in any product – the first is whether it’s enjoyable to use, and the second is whether it works. If I am totally honest with you, it’s few and far between that actually meet both these criteria. After a month of using these three products in conjunction with one another I can tell you that I absolutely adore the results. I don’t know what the long term effects will be but so far things are looking good and Sanctuary Spa have never let me down yet!
On the other point however, they are an absolute joy to use. They smell beautiful, make you feel like you have been utterly indulged, and particularly thanks to their accessible prices that is something really worthwhile considering, because a if your morning facial routine makes you smile that has to be a good start to any day!
