From looking good on four hours’ sleep to seriously big hair, singer Chloe Swaby talks to us about travelling the world and singing in front of Kate Nash…
What are you up to at the moment?
For the last two years I have been enjoying working as a professional singer. It is what I have always dreamt of doing – performing all over the world with different bands and musicians. I have recently just been on a two-month tour in Russia with a UK Pink Floyd band, which was an incredible experience, and more recently I performed with my acoustic duet in Egypt for the opening of a hotel. The work I get is very varied and my schedule is forever changing. I am having an awesome time travelling the world and meeting new people through music. In the next few months I have gigs in Germany, Switzerland and the USA including a gig at Madison Square gardens which is a dream come true for me! I am living in London, enjoying city life and always wondering where and what the next job will be.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The thing that I love most about my job is that it enables me to travel the world and meet new people every single day. I am also very lucky to absolutely love what I do for a living. I love seeing people enjoying themselves and having an awesome time. Music is such a powerful tool to brighten someone’s day or change their mood and there is nothing I love more than seeing someone have a great time at a party and dancing to the music we are playing.
What’s the strangest experience you have had in your career so far?
I was hired by someone’s boyfriend to sing to his girlfriend on her birthday. We turned up (me and a guitarist) and surprised the girl in the middle of a busy street in London. He did not tell us that he wasn’t going to be there so it ended up being a hilarious situation where she was unbelievably embarrassed and confused and then rushed off, as you would when a random person starts singing to you in the street. I later found out that she hadn’t seen her boyfriend for six months as he lived in Turkey and he had told her he had a special surprise for her. The poor girl was probably thinking that he was flying over to surprise her and then we turned up and serenaded her with her favourite song! I will remember that gig forever.
What has been the best experience so far?
I have had so many amazing experiences over the last few years it is hard to choose the best one but there are a few that stand out for me. Playing my own music to an amazing crowd at London Jazz Café, having Kate Nash watch and compliment me on my set before she came on an performed after us, having one of my lovely Irish fans sing my song Lead Us There back to me with tears in her eyes, and performing my first ever stadium gig in Russia with the Pink Floyd show UK to thousands of people … those were pretty awesome!
What’s your idea of the perfect day of relaxation?
Lying on a tropical beach with a Pina colada!
When are you at your happiest?
As much as I love music, my family and friends will always come first. I am never happier than when I’m spending quality time with them. My line of work means that I am always on the go and sometimes don’t have as much time as I would like to spend with them which means the time I do get is very precious.
When do you feel at your most glamorous?
During the daytime I don’t normally wear a lot of make-up. I hang around in my ‘crazy leggings’ as my friends call them, sling on a jumper and put my hair in a bun on top of my head. However I can’t deny that I love the moment when I get to curl my hair and make it bigger than ever thought possible, put on some make-up and get ready for a gig. Every girl secretly loves dressing up! I feel that being casual in the day makes you feel even more glamorous when you perform in the evening.
Do you have a role model?
Vocal role model – Eva Cassidy
Fashion role model – Victoria Beckham, she is always impeccably dressed!
Body/figure role model – Rosie Huntington Whitely
And I just love Kate Middleton in general
Who would play you in a movie?
Rachel McAdams in the Notebook!
Do you have a ‘desert island’ beauty product?
Mascara – I look like an alien without it – all fair haired women know what I am talking about.
Top tip for looking and feeling your best when you have a hectic schedule?
Drinking a lot of water is key when I have a hectic schedule and have had no sleep. In this industry you are sometimes lucky to get eight hours sleep. Sometimes I may only have three or four hours sleep in four days and so it is really important, especially as a singer, to stay healthy and look after your body. We might finish a gig at 2/3am and be travelling a long way on a plane or car means it is so easy to grab fast food like McDonalds or eat rubbish to keep your energy levels up but actually eating healthy food throughout the week and exercising is much better during a busy schedule. Make-up is also a lifesaver for those early morning shows!
