Where did the idea for Nom come from?
I developed allergies in my early twenties while I was at university and around the same time my Mum was diagnosed with cancer. As a family, we had always eaten a healthy diet, but it was at this point that we took more of an active interest in diet and nutrition. I cut out dairy, refined sugars and wheat and immediately saw the difference in my general health and energy levels. I wanted to make free-from foods which were appealing to everyone, not just those with an allergy or intolerance. I chose some of my favourite superfoods and started developing recipes and products.
What has been the hardest part of starting up the company?
The hardest parts so far have been finding a suitable manufacturer and also finding funding. The plan had always been to outsource the manufacture of the bars, but on doing some research it quickly became apparent that finding a factory which would make the bars to look and taste as they did when I made them in the kitchen (and had the right license to make organic foods) was going to be hard. Cash flow is difficult for many new/small businesses, but starting a new brand from scratch is a very costly exercise which requires a lot of investment.
What makes nom different from other healthy food products?
Nom products are different because they offer both taste and health – this can be hard to find. Nom products are innovative and offer the consumer something different. The bars were the first on the market to contain coconut oil – a real superfood which holds many health benefits. By doing things a bit differently, Nom is creating a new space in the quickly expanding free-from market. Nom bars are not posing as healthy, they are healthy! The products are also made with ethically sourced, vegan ingredients, which means they’re kind to people’s bodies, the environment, farmers and animals!
