You see, it suddenly dawned on me that the extent of my knowledge on sponges came from birthday cakes, doing the washing up, and a few episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. I was completely clueless as I’ve really been more of a loofah girl but never one to shy away from a spot of pampering, I grabbed ‘Bob’, and headed to the bathroom.
The sponge itself is pretty hard when dry, so I was a little apprehensive about using it on my body, as it does resemble a squishy bit of coral. Now, I’m all for exfoliation, but I draw the line at rubbing sea anemones on my arms in a bid to smooth them. Luckily, looks can be deceiving and never again will I judge a sponge by its dry state; as soon as water is involved it softens right up.
The lather produced with the sponge is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. You know in films when people put too much soap in the washing machine and they come back to it and the laundry room completely flooded and filled with foam? Well, it’s like that but without the water damage and painful plumber bills.
Usually that amount of lather would be wasting precious minutes from your daily routine rinsing it out again and again to get the last of the bubbles out, so it doesn’t sit and grow mould in the corner, but this one is surprisingly quick and easy to wring out as well!
Following my shower my skin was smoother than Carlos Santana, and so soft it begged to be touched. Well, more accurately, I begged people to touch it, but after they did they all agreed that yes, it was incredibly soft. Comparisons to cashmere were made, I’m just saying.
Now for the technical bit! Sea sponges have been used since around 3BC, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. They’re collected from the ocean floor in Greece, Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas; they are thoroughly cleaned and prepared during a 10-stage cleaning process.
Additionally, because they are natural and eco-friendly, some of them contain microbial symbionts (try and say that quickly) that are used to control viruses, bacteria, and tumours.
Essentially, it brings you all the benefits that a synthetic sponge would, except it lasts far longer, leaves you feeling more pampered, and is infinitely easier to clean. Victoria move aside, there’s a new secret in town!
