Continuing our month celebrating everything about getting together with our friends, especially time with the girls, Zeina, explains why Fifth Harmony’s Me and My Girls is our spa soundtrack for March…
You know there’s that one song that makes you want to get all dolled up, grab your friends, and walk in slow-motion towards a club or party while catching admiring glances from people around you who are clearly not having as great a time as you are? This is that song.
I know that’s a sweeping statement, but this unadulterated sugary pop makes me want to overplay it to the point of getting a cavity. The lyrics are the epitome of girls having fun; encouraging dreaded karaoke, taking silly selfies, and generally getting “crazy with it”.
The ‘it’ in this scenario I can only assume is some form of booty poppin’, dropping it like it’s hot, or any other generic dance move that momentarily sweeps the nation and makes anyone over the age of 25 feel 105. Beyond that though is the reminder that “you’re all I need, there’s nowhere I’d rather be”, and I find it quite refreshing to hear those lyrics in reference to friendship instead of romantic love.
With a tune that is catchier than a cold at nursery, the rhythm makes you want to bring their lyric “dance like no one’s watching” to life. It’s a toe tapping, hip swaying, hand jiving treat, and a total secret guilty pleasure for all the music snobs out there. Plus there’s a bridge that is so very Nicki Minaj, which makes this into more of a club banger and incredibly danceable.
But what is especially appealing about this one is that behind the feel-good aspect and total sing-along-able factor is some semblance of realism. The girls croon “times like this don’t always come along”, which is so relatable.
Realistically you can’t spend every day getting “diva on it”, or screaming along with your favourite songs all night long, because you’d lose your voice and it would lose its novelty. It’s the fact that those nights are so fleeting that makes them all the more special which Fifth Harmony has managed to capture so well.
What’s your favourite soundtrack?
