Before we get too far into this, we should point out that while it is a wholehearted love letter from women to women, it isn’t to the detriment of the men out there – they are also awesome. After all, it was Coco Chanel who once said ‘I don’t know why women want any of the things that men have, when one of the things that women have is men.’
That said, it is International Women’s Day on Sunday and as people who have had the good fortune to meet, work with, and be related to some pretty spectacular women, here are a few reasons why it is only fitting that we celebrate and remind ourselves amidst all of the ‘circle of shame’ magazine features and Twitter attacks, that we are all part of a rather special club – or, without breaking into song about it, sisterhood.
Over the years, The Hot Tub has chatted to some awesome people from Sally Gunnell, Kelly Holmes, and Jessica Ennis-Hill to body confidence campaigners Natasha Devon and Rosi Prescott. We have spoken to business leaders juggling spreadsheets with motherhood, high-flyers who have overcome personal adversity to achieve beyond expectation, and conversed with women whose wit and intelligence has left us doubled over with laughter ( Nevermind The Botox, we’re looking at you).
In our own team we have seen colleagues walk 100 miles to raise money for women coming to terms with cancer, nurtured talents within our ranks to watch individuals rise in confidence and responsibility, and last year we saw three of our girls become mums for the first time.
You see, while there is a lot of criticism to be had at every juncture and turn, the Spice Girls had something right, there’s actually something pretty powerful about being a girl, and the real beauty of it is that while we have the support of wonderful men, it’s also important that we recognize just that, about one another.
It’s not about equality or a lack thereof, it’s simply nice to celebrate the things that make us, well, us! Goodness knows we are not perfect – frankly it would be a pretty boring world if we were! Stereotypes have their place and we all know that it is well within our capabilities to throw a hormonal strop if the mood strikes, and sometimes it does. We can be bitchy, unkind, stroppy, irrational and unpleasant – not least of all to each other.
But here’s the thing, the reason we can do that is because we know something very important. We know that no one will tear us down and build us up even stronger again like the women in our lives. No one will know better than another woman, when we are kidding ourselves, realize we are not ok when we say that we are, and understand that our seemingly irrational logic or behavior is actually part of our overwhelming strength.
So while we are wholly grateful for the men in our lives, to all the important girls that we are so lucky to have around us, Sunday is all about you. Happy International Women’s Day, make it a good one!
