That time of year is approaching when we are all ready to take a couple weeks off work and have a nice holiday. The days are getting longer and the temperature is getting slightly warmer. Yes thats right summer is FINALLY approaching! So with that in mind its time get active and get in shape for your summer holiday. There are many ways that you can be more active without spending hours in the gym and here are just a few…
Going for a nice walk is a great way to get active and to get outdoors. Try mapping out a loop that you’d like to walk that will roughly LAST between 30 minutes and an hour, keep a nice pace up – it’s is a great way to burn off those extra calories we have been consuming over the winter months. Hiking up mountains is also a great calorie burner, it will be more challenging but you’ll also get to enjoy some great views on the way. In fact both myself and TV presenter Anna Williamson will be taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge for the charity Mind this year, which will see us trekking up three mountains in 24 hours. It’s a tough challenge but it’s going to be a great experience.
Going for a bike ride is another way to enjoy the fresh outdoors and be active, again plan your route before you set off, and who knows maybe you can plan the route so that there’s a nice pub that does some tasty food half way round to grab some (healthy!) lunch.
For you sports lovers out there why not play some tennis? Tennis is a great way to get fit and have some fun at the same time, the beauty of this sport is that you can play it outdoors when the weather is good, or indoors when the weather isn’t quite so nice.
For those of you who need a little bit more encouragement or motivation why not book a personal training session with a local PT? Personal training sessions can be very educational and teach you many things about your body and what you need to work on to shape up. With the expert advice and exercise demonstrations from a personal trainer you can get into shape quicker and more effectively. You could even opt to try an online personal trainer, which is something I offer my clients, can be just as effective, and can free up some precious time and money too.
After all this activity its time to relax and stretch those muscles. Your muscles can become very tight when being active as they are being worked so it’s a good idea to give them a good old stretch. I’ve always found yoga sessions to be very enjoyable, they can be quite tough mind you, and you will certainly find out which areas of your body need more work on to improve flexibility, but overall they’re fantastic and you will come out feeling incredibly relaxed.
So, there you have it! My top tips for getting active and in shape for the summer.
