When I am asked to read self help books for The Hot Tub part of me always sighs quietly and dreads the prospect. The genre really needs a more inspiring moniker, but Katie’s book is more like a manual – the home version of her practice as a mentor and transformational coach. Her belief is that all good change lies in the ability to love who you are, and it comes complete with exercises to do and an interactive approach to learning on her website Daring and Mighty .
Having interviewed Katie last month, what struck me through her book was just how clear her own tone of voice is. Her life experiences have undoubtedly shaped her down to Earth but loving approach to supporting others. The content is easy to read and no nonsense at the same time; I suspect the warm and supportive tone of voice is partially down to her other full time occupation as a mum.
The important thing about Katie’s book is that it’s a proactive choice to read it. It’s not something to pick up before you doze off at night. This requires a pencil, paper, thinking time and focus, not because it’s hard to read, but because it’s a metaphor for the commitment that process requires in terms of how you want to change your life, attitude and wellbeing.
As with all of these things, my suspicion is that readers would get the most out of Katie’s book if it was combined with a session with her in person, even just a taster session such as her Tantrum Club spa day at Ockenden Manor.
I think perhaps what shines through in Katie’s book over others that I have read is the sense of purpose with which it’s written. Of course this is now Katie’s job and one she needs to make a living out of, but it’s also a calling born out of her own experiences, trials and tribulations. Not the kind that are glamorised on X-Factor, but some very tough experiences that all too many of us are familiar with.
Katie’s desire to help is palpable, and I am sure that through her book and her work that’s exactly what she will do.
