A mixture of passionate individuals, brands and organisations who share the belief that it is a travesty that in this day and age, people with cancer are still being refused a spa treatment.
Four years ago I launched Recovery Retreats because I identified the need for people with cancer to be able to book a spa experience safe in the knowledge that they wouldn’t be turned away. At the time there seemed to be little knowledge or awareness of people with cancer being treated in spas, but I knew I had to do something to help. Now, we find that as the consumer gets more savvy they are now not mentioning they have cancer to us because they know that the majority of spas will turn them away. This for me is as big a travesty as being refused a treatment, because it shows we aren’t doing enough to address the issue. So, the reason I am an active board member of TpoT is to ensure that the training is being done at grassroot level, so that every therapist in this country will be trained on how to treat a person with cancer, meaning that of the 5000 people we send away to spas every week, those who have or have had cancer will not experience the indignity that others have in the past.
From research, we at Spabreaks.com know that people with cancer don’t want to be treated any differently to anyone else, or have to buy a spa experience on a different section of our site just because they have cancer. They want to share a spa experience with their loved ones for the exact same reason that everyone else does. It is important to me that this simple need is met and I believe I can help make this happen through being involved with TpoT.
Perception and attitude. Our three keys words are Educate, Empower and Unite, If we can do all three of these things to both the training and educational bodies, the spas and the consumer then we can make sure than in three years’ time not one person will ever be refused a spa treatment at any stage of the treatment.
I am most excited about the shift in attitude we are already seeing from certain accrediting educational bodies and the spas themselves. The momentum is increasing and the more we shout, the louder our united voice will be.
