Natural cold busters for the winter

For something so common, the mundane cold is an affliction that causes no end of misery, and yet the solution seems elusive. Everyone has their recommendations, but do they really work? Whether they’re easing the symptoms or providing a placebo, here are some of the solutions that Spabreakers swear by…

winter cold

Garlic, honey and milk for a cold

When you start to feel that tickle appearing in your throat and your head is getting heavy, this old wives tale sounds revolting, but give it a go next time you feel a cold coming on before you go to bed, and you might be surprised by the results. Mix a glass of milk with honey and a clove of chopped garlic, warm and drink. The taste isn’t as bad as it seems… although you might not want to organise a date any time immediately after taking it!

Frankincense oil for a headache

There can be no doubt about how relaxing a few essential oils are – why else would they be the domain of our much beloved spas? That said, the next time you have a splitting headache, instead of reaching for the Paracetamol, have a glass of water and rhythmically rub a couple of drops of frankincense oil into your temples with your fingertips. Breathe deeply and see how you feel!

Honey and lemon for a sore throat

It’s like Calpol for adults – comforting, sweet and a winter warmer that has been tried and tested for years. Goodness knows if it does anything at all, but it makes us feel loved and looked after, and that’s important.

Salt water… for everything

A natural antiseptic that works a treat on sore gums, infected teeth, sore throats and cuts and grazes. It’s one of those things that your nan used to tell you to do when you had a sore throat and the threat alone was enough to make you wrap up warm and not risk a cold – next time you’re throat’s hurting? Gargle with salt water friends!
