Let’s talk about skin, most specifically mine now that I am 64. It certainly isn’t the same as when I was 21 but, on the whole, I am happy with it. You notice changes gradually. I never suffered from dry skin when I was younger and hardly used body moisturisers or oils, but now that I do, I find that my skin is softer for it. I would advise you to be more sensible than I was and start applying them regularly while you are young, just as you do with facial moisturisers.
My biggest plague is uneven skin tone and age spots on the face and hands. I think this is something I inherited from my mother so you may get them. We are lucky today that we get such a lot of good advice about high factor sun cream which can lessen pigmentation, and there are treatments that will help to reduce age spots if they do come along, so take it in your stride, it’s just a part of life.
Everyone worries about lines but please try not too, they are inevitable. Live with them, they are not a problem. The less you worry the less frown lines you will get anyway. It’s important to make sure you take care of your face though. Cleanse and moisturise morning and night, that’s my mantra, and if you can stretch to the occasional facial all the better. It’s lovely to treat yourself.
Talking about stretching, stretch marks from pregnancy are honourable scars. You may worry about getting them. When I first had you I wasn’t very happy about them, but keep moisturising and keep fit and it’s surprising the way they seem to melt away.
I also have various scars on my skin. You can look at your body and bring back memories, some good some bad, but all from different times in your life; the scar on my shin from being kicked by a pony when I was 12 (otherwise the trekking holiday was great), the lines either side of my ankle from when it was broken (not so fun), the scar on my finger where I nearly chopped it off cooking after a row with my mother (no more rows sadly, now she is gone).
So I can see a history of 64 years just by looking at my skin. It’s not in bad shape considering. If I am to sum it up for you in a few words, make the best of what you have got (which is beautiful), protect it when out in the sun, cleanse and moisturise, love yourself, and smile!
