For me Ellenborough Park is what five star’s all about. Where it feels that some places dabble in it, this made me feel incredibly special, which is a really powerful achievement on a one night stay; the whole experience made me feel like the queen.
The hotel is elegant and high end, it’s Cotswoldy but not chintzy, and little things have been carefully tended to including the constant presence of homemade cookies that you can pick up and take to eat sitting on the sofas. There are lots of little romantic places to sit and spend time, and the bed was the comfiest bed I’ve slept in, in every shape and form; the mattress, the duvet, the quality, the pillows – it gave me the best night’s sleep I’ve had to the point where I want to buy all the linen and replicate it at home. Even the bathrooms make you feel special as the bath stuff smells of wild flowers; I thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the rolltop bath and then I could smell the products all day, reminding me of that moment of peace.
There’s an Indian theme throughout the spa which works in happy juxtaposition with the Cotswold stone surroundings. There’s a relaxed atmosphere (as one would hope), but you’re in no doubt about the sense of luxury that’s here. There’s a gym, Jacuzzi, sensation showers, sauna and juice bar while outside there’s a pool that’s heated to 29 degrees so it can be used all through the winter months and is a really lovely experience. Treatments use the Babor products which are all about re-balancing and relaxing after winding down in the pre-treatment tea bar – bliss!
They have a formal restaurant with three AA rosettes in the form of the beaufort Dining Room, but I chose to eat in the brasserie in the evening where I had steak with chips and salad (you can always tell a good restaurant by their steak), and it was phenomenal. I’m sure the perfect presentation made it taste even better. Breakfast was in the form of a buffet but there was also a cooked option available to order and again it was laid out immaculately which made it even more of a pleasure to eat.
Ellenborough Park is located in the beautiful Cotswolds surrounded by stunning countryside and lots of grounds to walk and run around in, all the while enjoying the view. If you’re thinking of proposing the area is known for being ultra romantic as it’s filled with history and beautiful architecture.
The quality of the service and style here is really on another level. It is expensive but it’s worth every penny you pay. If it was on that programme where guests pay what they think their hotel experience was worth, this is one where I would pay full whack every time.
