I always think that a spa is a particularly good place to renew your enthusiasm for fitness because it changes the environment from your bog standard gym and brings new options and ideas into your sphere of consciousness – after all, we can all get a little jaded with the prospect of a treadmill. So in addition to the expertise available, here are some of the ways this little haven in Kent can help you to feel fighting fit this summer…
Reynolds Retreat is set in 17 acres of parkland in Kent, all of which is part and parcel of the restorative experience that they have on offer. It’s not just about burning calories, it’s about experiencing this beautiful environment right from the moment you are greeted by the yew trees along the drive. So why is that important? Well, getting outside isn’t just a more inspiring way to work out (particularly if the weather is good), it actually has positive health benefits for mind, body and soul. In 2009 a study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, said that the closer you live to nature, the healthier you’re likely to be, while urban environments tended to correlate with higher rates of anxiety and depression. Meanwhile, researchers in Sweden found that joggers outside amongst the greenery were less anxious than those who burned the same amount of calories in the gym. While there are bound to be lots of contributing factors, the hypothesis is that the increase in vitamin D from being outside is a major contributor.
Fitness is a very personal thing and while running works for one person swimming works for another. We’re also always being told that a good variety of different exercise is best to work different muscles and to stop us from getting a sense of fatigue about the workouts we do. So the variety of options available to try while you’re at Reynolds Fitness Spa is a brilliant opportunity to discover new things and get a renewed sense of enthusiasm for exercise and fitness. In amongst the options are an army style bootcamp, running, walking and bike trails, outdoor yoga and Pilates, and of course a fully equipped gym with more interesting features than your bog standard treadmill, such as a climbing wall and TRX training.
Stretching and unwinding after a workout often seem to go to the bottom of the to-do list, but it’s worth remembering that when it comes to sustainability in fitness, the relaxing part is just as important as the hard-going workout bit. It sounds like a good excuse to have a massage (not that we need an excuse), but as there is a dedicated stretch zone in the gym, do use it, and of course part of the deal at Reynolds is the variety of spa treatments on offer. Reducing stress levels and developing ways to keep them at bay are also important for preventing disruption to hormone levels, which otherwise has an impact on wider health as well. So once you’ve done the bootcamp, worked out in the gym, had a go at outdoor yoga and feel ready to unwind, do opt for a treatment or two. They have a spectacularly wide range on offer for men and women, if you haven’t tried it yet then a Lava Shell Massage is wonderful for all those with pesky and seemingly immovable knots!
