Building sandcastles with the kids and having picnics with friends are what summer holidays are made of, especially with so many AMAZING beaches to head to on a UK staycation or overseas.
So forget the ‘beach body’ adverts; summer’s too short, all you need is a good beach, good company, clothes you feel confident and comfortable in, and somewhere to stay that makes you feel like a queen…
Recently voted one of Europe’s best beaches, Bantham is a haven for surfers and families alike. Ideal for paddling, swimming, rockpooling and paddle boarding it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new… what could possibly be better than a surfing lesson in the sun (the guys at Bantham Surfing Academy are awesome) followed by enormous chocolate brownies bought from the Gastrobus (yeah, you heard us, it’s food in a bus)? Sandy toes and salty sweets are what happy memories are made of here!
spare cossies – you’re gonna want to spend all day here so make sure you take a spare swimming costume for you and the kids so you aren’t hanging about it a wet one all day after that first swim. After all, who wants to build a sandcastle with a soggy bottom?
The Dartmouth Hotel for family-friendly facilities, a beautiful setting, delightful treatments and easy driving distance to both the beaches and the wider attractions in the area.
Also known as a surfing hotspot, Fistral Beach in Cornwall is home to a Quiksilver surf school where we can personally recommend a lesson with the blondest, bubbliest, nicest instructor in the world, Sarah. In addition to the surfing however, if you book a weekend getaway at Fistral Beach Hotel (as the name suggests, it’s basically on the beach) then you can follow all that exercise with a stint in the spa before heading into Newquay for a night out (or just stay in and watch the sunset, whatever floats your boat).
A good pair of flip flops to get your tootsies from the hotel to the beach and across the pebbly bits without a care in the world about getting them covered in sand.
The aptly named Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa – wonderful views from its cliff top position, walking distance (or even spitting distance) from the beach, modern facilities and a pool that’s perfect for nattering in, and easy access to Newquay if you want to head out for the evening.
Just around the corner from Bantham Beach (you can see it if you look hard enough), South Milton Sands is a stretch of rugged coastline where the sea crashes onto the sand and the sun sets in the middle of the ocean – what could possibly be more romantic? The Beachhouse (which is all of about five feet square) serves awesome food, from doorstop bacon sandwiches at breakfast to the most decadent seafood platter in the evening – if you’re trying to impress, THAT’s the way to go!
A cover up to go straight from sand to spritzers without skipping a beat.
It’s a little bit of a drive, but Bovey Castle is a beautiful romantic hotel to stay in when you and your other half visit this part of the world. Make a day trip to the beach and then return to 275 acres of Dartmoor National Park, the art deco inspired spa and a manor house fit for the gentry.
