Shall we tell you a secret? We love to travel to Portugal for spa breaks just as much in the autumn and winter as we do in the summer. Especially when the spa is as special as Vilalara Longevity Thalassa and Medical Spa in the Algarve…

First impressions

Warm air, a beautiful location and easy to travel to.  These are the first things that strike you when you arrive at Vilalara Longevity Thalassa and Medical Spa. As part of a resort, it has a lovely relaxed vibe to what can be made into an all-singing, all-dancing health and wellbeing experience if you choose. The modern architecture lets light flood through, which instantly makes you feel rejuvenated. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel happy simply to ‘be’.

The hotel

Choose from suite and apartment accommodation according to the kind of holiday you’re after, Vilalara Longevity Thalassa and Medical Spa has the lot. As part of a wider resort, it caters to a variety of guests, whether you choose to travel as a special treat, a family holiday or specifically for the wellbeing side of things. Keep in mind that while families are welcome, the wellness centre is strictly adult only.

The spa

Within the resort is the Thalassa and Medical Spa, renowned for its award-winning service. Using the healing powers of marine therapies thanks to the thalassa element, it’s a mind, body and soul experience whether you’re looking for anti-ageing treatments or a mindfulness travel experience. The medical spa element allows it to be a more directive based experience as well, offering stress management, lifestyle, wellness and nutritional advice, biochemical tests, ozonetherapy, osteopathy, face peels, and carboxitherapy alongside the more usual elements such as body wraps, massages, facials and so forth.

The restaurant

The resort’s restaurant isn’t just used by residents, it’s popular with those who travel from far and wide, which is always an excellent sign. The B&G Restaurant serves local produce on top of the cliff, with the Atlantic Ocean stretched out in front of you as far as the eye can see. Being a wellness resort, the restaurant also serves gourmet meals, while the Terrace Grill is a seasonal restaurant that brings you fresh seafood and summer barbeques complete with live music.

The location

Just 40 minutes from Faro airport, the spa is encased in spectacular modern architecture inspired by Gaudi, that’s enhanced by its natural surroundings. Letting in the light, you look out onto beautiful gardens, beaches, parkland and blue waters.

The verdict

While the resort welcomes families, in truth Vilalara Longevity Thalassa and Medical Spa is the sort of place that you really want to preserve for treating yourself and your partner or a very good friend. It’s peaceful and warm and you can opt into the wellbeing and health element as much as you like. Either way you’re sure to leave feeling rejuvenated – it’s a place for feeling that little bit healthier and putting a spring back in your step so you feel ready to take on the world with newfound energy when you travel home.

Top tips

– Take advantage of the wellness centre and their wealth of knowledge and book in for one of their spa programmes to really make the most of your break.
– The spa offers some unique therapies so use this as an opportunity to try something a little different in addition to those massages and facials.
– Take a book and allow yourself time to breathe and be on the beach or in the grounds, listening to the waves roll by.
