What makes your work special?
I love what I do as a nutritionist and seeing the positive effects it has on my clients always gives me a real boost. This is what inspired me to create my company GP Nutrition and the range of supplement programs we launched this year to help even more people!
What interested you in becoming a nutritionist?
Nutrition is so vital for our health, supporting all the systems of the body, you really are what you eat! While working in fashion I was exposed to a lot of unhealthy fad diets and trends and I wanted to understand the impact of inner health on outer beauty.
How has the increasingly fast pace of life impacted diet?
With the constant demands of modern life it’s often difficult to make time for yourself and to switch off, I think this has translated into our diet with a lot of fast convenience food which can lack the nutrition of homemade options. It also means that we are less aware of the food we are eating, where it comes from and what effect it is having on our body.
What are the most common issues you come across?
Some of the most common issues I come across in clinic are lack of energy and fatigue, weight management, immunity issues and skin support. This is really why I chose to design the GP Nutrition range around these complaints. For people with busy, modern lifestyles who understood the importance of looking after themselves but didn’t necessarily have the time to see a nutritionist.
Are food sensitivities more common now? If so, why?
I believe food sensitivities are much more common now because of the huge changes in our diet exposing us to certain foods a lot more than others, such as gluten and dairy which are some of the most common sensitivities.
You talk a lot about supplements – do we really need them? Can we not get nutrition from diet alone?
As our diets have changed so dramatically within a relatively short space of time, the demands of modern life and a lot of poor quality food we are often not getting the nutrition we need from diet alone. Therefore supplements can be a beneficial to supporting health, I do believe that most people can benefit from them.
What’s your number one tip for a healthy diet?
Eat the rainbow! Including a range of different colored vegetables, fruits, grains, pulses and lean protein every day for maximum nutrients and vitamins.
What are your views on superfoods – is that a real thing or just a marketing ploy?
Some foods definitely are more nutritious than others and although the term superfoods can be thrown around a bit too much. Including a variety of nutritious foods is really the key.
What are your views on detox? Is it necessary if you have a healthy diet? Is it safe?
The body naturally detoxes itself safely, and this is supported by a healthy diet. However, regardless of how well you look after yourself we are exposed every day to chemicals from alcohol, pollution, diet and cosmetics which can leave you feeling depleted. The liver is designed to neutralize these impurities, therefore supporting this process can be very beneficial through healthy dietary additions such as dark green leafy vegetables or recommended supplementation.
