When your temper is frayed and your muscles have taken on a whole new, hunched sort of formation, this friends, is the true test of a spa treatment, and boy did UNA Spa deliver.
A day spa in St Ives, deep into Cornwall for those driving, UNA Spa is a contemporary set up, all beautifully laid out, but so new that even Google hasn’t quite found it yet – basically get to the point Google maps takes you to and carry on for another hundred yards, it will be on your right.
Once there, you will be greeted by a reception area with the spa to your right and the restaurant to your left. It’s all light, airy and ultra modern. A quick tour will show you towards a huge indoor infinity pool in a wonderfully light room with massive windows looking onto the gardens, alongside a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. There are also a few loungers peppered about so you can relax with a magazine.
It’s worth noting that children are allowed in the pool so on quieter days it’s a sanctuary, but in school holidays as this haven gets better known you may find you want to pick and choose your timing to have your treatments. Suffice to say however, this is an idyllic place to swim and wind down before your treatments.
This really is where the magic happens. I opted for a full body aromatherapy massage and my goodness it was a dream. I am fussy as they come with massage, prone to being ticklish but preferring a deep tissue approach, and my therapist Carly adapted it with aplomb. I all but fell asleep and was blissfully happy by the end of the 55 minute treatment (25 minutes is never enough).
Similarly, my partner, who is new to the spa world and has recently had surgery, also had a massage, and showing their skill, his therapist adapted his treatment to suit his needs. It’s worth noting that the therapists at UNA are highly trained, and are also qualified to deliver treatments to cancer patients; it’s really a place where they know what they’re talking about.
The products also deserve a special mention here – Spiezia organics is made nearby in Cornwall, and not only do they smell heavenly, they really make your skin feel wonderful without being heavy – I wanted to take them all home.
When I visited, the whole complex was brand new, and by the time you read this the restaurant will be taking on a whole new significance with more options available. At this time however, the small cafe area was light and welcoming with a limited by tasty menu of cakes and light lunches. We opted for a chickpea and kale soup and it was worth every mouthful – warming on a cold March day, and healthy enough to make me feel like i hadn’t just undone all of Carly’s good work.
For most of us, this is a long way to come for a day spa, but if you happen to be staying in the area or living here I highly recommend it. It’s a wonderful place to visit and definitely worth making the effort to head to for the treatments alone. The service and quality of skill is excellent and I am so pleased I got the chance to enjoy the experience. Perfect for a day to yourself or visiting with a small group of friends.
