Perhaps an unlikely spot for a holiday for those not in the know, Essex is not only a convenient place to travel to, with easy transport links, but it also has a breadth of spa and leisure experiences that hold appeal for adult spa travellers particularly if you’re travelling with family and friends.
We all need time out, and a little and often is best say the experts, making a strong case for many a staycation over a few days rather than simply storing up our holiday for a lengthy period of time off once a year.
The spas in Essex range from Lifehouse Spa and Hotel, a wellness retreat with all the health and wellbeing advantages of the best of spa hotels but with the option to take it as far as you want (yes, you can still have a champagne cocktail in the evening), to Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes, a longstanding favourite of Spabreakers for its wide reaching appeal.
Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester has been hailed for its easily accessible approach to all elements of wellbeing and leisure, numerous facilities which include a golf course, badminton, squash, table tennis and a sweeping variety of foodie options to cater to all moods from comfort food to lighter options, all looking out onto 320 acres of countryside views. For those visiting with kids, there are also 28 family rooms, and children are allowed in the pool at all times.
Spa breaks don’t have to be just about the spa experience itself. Ultimately, it’s about you enjoying your time out. For those who want to combine it with other activities, Essex provides entertainment and curiosities for all.
While TOWIE may have given insight into Essex’s nightlife, more time tested attractions include the likes of the Tiptree Tea Rooms – if you’re as much of a fan of breakfast as we are then that name will mean something to you. For everyone else, this is the home of the famous Tiptree jams, gracing slightly burned toast since 1885. Jams were made in the long, low farm building which now houses the Tiptree museum, so what could be better than an honorary croissant with marmalade and a cup of tea in honour of dear Mr Wilkin (the founder, in case you didn’t cotton on).
Alternatively, Colchester Zoo, a favourite with our very own Spabreakers whose little ones gloried in being able to feed the giraffes and elephants from the palms of their very own hands and play keeper for the day, stepping into the boots of the zoo keepers to take a closer look at some of the planets endangered species (a joy for adults as well incidentally).
It would be foolish of us to make an exhaustive list of favourite attractions in Colchester and Essex, but other favourites in our repertoire include The Beth Chatto Gardens, curated by the award-winning plantswoman and Colchester Castle – the largest built by the Normans in Europe and a magical insight into the area’s history.
The beauty of Essex is that there’s lots to do with more always being added, all alongside warm and welcoming spa hotels to add a little extra something to that mini break or short holiday.
