In County Wexford in Ireland, on the ancient east coast, The Millrace Hotel is a welcoming hotel where you can have your down time and enough space to enjoy it with family and friends as well. There’s a little something for everyone…

First impressions

You are first introduced to the hotel via the picture perfect town of Bunclody. Character abounds and there is an instant feeling of relaxation and mutual excitement as you approach the contemporary hotel and think ‘yup, these people know what they’re doing.’

The hotel

The four star luxury hotel is all at once characterful, contemporary and welcoming. There are 60 rooms including three suites, and interconnecting family rooms so everyone on a group or family holiday can have their own space. In addition to the picturesque little town, you look out onto rolling countryside, the golf course and are tantalised by the opportunity to get out and explore.

The spa

The spa is rather poetically named after the goddess of streams, presumably due to the hotel’s river location. Leisure facilities accommodate children with a kids club and the pool, but The Danu Spa itself is a little haven of seven treatment rooms, a relaxation suite, a nail bar and Elemis treatments – a tried and tested favourite.

The restaurant

The Mill Bistro is the main dining area, and it’s a relaxed occasion befitting the hotel. Steak nights, a Sunday carvery with the kids club and afternoon tea are all regular features that are much loved, but equally the joy of a romantic evening for two sipping champagne is very much on the cards.

The location

Located on a river, the family-friendly hotel is within easy reach of favourite sites including Weavers Cottages, Huntington Castle, and St. Fiaac’s Church of Ireland. For families, there’s also Ballykeenan Pet and Aviary Farm and Altamont Gardens, and if you are looking for a city jaunt then it’s an 80 minute drive to Dublin Airport. Alternatively, simply enjoy the grounds and maybe nip off for a round of golf or a spot of fishing.

The verdict

There is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy The Millrace Hotel, but its particular beauty is that it provides a relaxing place with lots of space for friends and family. There’s time to relax in the spa, but there’s also lots of other things to do, come rain or shine, thanks to the beautiful location and proximity to nearby attractions.

Top tips

  • If you’re visiting with kids, try the Sunday carvery for lunch.
  • Take time to head out and explore some of the nearby attractions – Ireland has a wonderful history that’s worth exploring at any opportunity.
