How to organise a mother/daughter spa day

The mother/daughter spa day is so enshrined in spa tradition that it’s practically a rite of passage. A mother and daughter spa break is a classic experience that can come in all shapes and sizes, from healthy spa retreats to Champagne afternoon teas, spa weekends to spa days. They’re a chance to spend quality time with your mum in a way that you probably don’t get to do as much as you would like, and can make a beautiful gift as well. Of course, there’s also no reason mothers and sons or fathers and sons can’t also share in this tradition either.

Even those of us who have truly awesome relationships with our parents can descend into bickering under the pressures of daily life. Kids screaming, dog running muddy paws through the house, Sunday roast burning. However, the ability to choose to spend time in an environment devoid of those strains, and navigate straight towards meaningful, unadulterated time together, is an empowered one.

In addition to that, spas at their core are about feeling good. From treatments to the total lack of pressure to do anything in particular, it’s time and space to feel good. That mindset simply enhances quality time together.

Perhaps one of the nicest things about a mother/daughter spa break is that there is no upper age limit on it. While many destinations may not facilitate mother/daughter time with very young children, the most beautiful spa experiences can be enjoyed at any adult age. Whether you’re 30, 40, 50 or 60. Whether your mum is 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100. There’s really no limit on enjoying a good spa treatment, beautiful accommodation and exceptional food.

Spas across the UK are masters in the art of creating beautiful mother/daughter spa experiences, and at we have worked with spas to create dedicated packages for just such occasions. However, a few tips for the perfect mother/daughter spa day include:

  • Book a dual treatment room so you can have a treatment like a facial together.
  • Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure together as well. At spas with a Champagne nail bar there might even be a glass of bubbly in it for you while you’re being pampered.
  • Book a spa experience that includes lunch, afternoon tea or dinner so you can have a good chat while you eat. It’s all about experiences that are made to be shared.
  • That said, sometimes the best thing about time together is simply being together without having to talk. Take a book or magazine so you can lounge by the pool or in the relaxation area and just enjoy one another’s company.

While there’s a wealth of spas to choose from for mother/daughter spa days and breaks, here are a few favourites ranging from health retreats to sheer indulgence to give you some inspiration:

House of Elemis, London

It is not always about facilities – pools, saunas and steam rooms. This central London jewel is entirely about the treatments. The height of decadence, it is somewhere to visit for a couple of hours of indulgent time. Treatments are precision focused, especially if you opt for a Couture Technology facial. Wander in and you are greeted by the smiling, unblemished faces of the Elemis team, who check you in and offer you herbal teas served in fine china while you fill in your consultation forms and await your appointment. After your treatment we would highly recommend perusing the boutique and spending a disgusting amount of money on Elemis products. Then go somewhere close by for further retail therapy, lunch or coffee. You’re perfectly located for it just off Bond Street!
