In the Usk Valley in South Wales, Celtic Manor provides luxury on a grand scale. A five-star experience with 330 bedrooms in the Resort Hotel, the design is contemporary and light, and key to its character are the three surrounding golf courses, for which the location is famed.
As you might expect from somewhere that is more of a small village than a hotel, there are several restaurants: The Olive Tree in the Resort Hotel serves all meals including breakfast and is invariably the dining domain of spa goers; Steak on Six, which is situated in a spectacular elevated setting on the sixth floor of the hotel, is the Signature dining option; and Merlin’s Bar is an altogether more relaxed affair. The newly opened Mulberry Bar with its sumptuous surroundings and decadent atmosphere is a hidden gem and the perfect place for an evening hideaway or pre-dinner cocktail.

Very disappointed with the facilities were very basic. My sister and I visit spa around Wales and write reviews. The staff were unhelpful and robotic. They need training in customer care they were very impersonal. We were not shown around the facilities just pointed in the direction of the changing rooms we weren't even told where to go for our lunch. There were only one relaxation area which in my opinion should have been dim lighted. It wasnt very clean and there were dirty cups left laying about.there wasn't any shampoo in the showers. On a positive note I must say the massage was very good but overall a very disappointing experience.
A lovely day, my massage was wonderful and the therapist was superb. There was some confusion around my name for the facial. When the therapist realised it was me she did apologise but claimed the computer also had my name wrong. Yes I had already had a massage that morning. I feel the therapist then rushed my facial which meant it was not very enjoyable
Had a lovely time at the Celtic manor would have given it a 5 but both jacuzzis were not working and that's what I was looking forward to. There were men working in the pool area and was quite noisy on times. Food and treatment were lovely though.
Such a shame it was so busy on the night I went. The place was heaving, and I found it very difficult to relax. There were lots of dirty cups and glasses in the relaxation room , which was also very cold and noisy with very loud chatty quests. There were no clean cups and glasses at 6.30pm. My treatments were good , but I was reluctant to stay to use other facilities as it was not what I was expecting. Although I was told my treatments may not be at the exact time I had requested them, I felt disappointed that I requested 6pm , then had an email confirming 5pm , and when I arrived I was told it was 4pm ! There didn't seem to be enough staff either and I felt rushed. Maybe the forum is better on other days so avoid a Friday x
Spa had booked in my time for treatment which I was unable to change. I was advised I could choose my own time.
we were unable to use relaxation room as it was too full.
The pool/spa area was too busy couldnt use facilities properly.
As they had booked in my treatment at 3pm and we had arrived at 11am there was a long wait for the treatment as we couldnt properly use other facilities.
The lunch was absolutly awful, we were advised we could go in robes as we would of had to get dressed then undressed again for treatment. We were sat in a public area and the luch was a cold buffet with very random items that didnt really go together, we were only able to have water as a beverage with our lunch.
Enjoyed the massage but other than that I thought it was awful.
From the time I arrived through the door from the car park the staff were very welcoming and helpful. Facilities were all very clean and the housekeeping ladies were in and out keeping them tidy. The Spa staff were all very cheerful and ensured you were well filled with liquid refreshments!
Wonderful day at Celtic Manor, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The facilities are very good and the pool is big so that if people want.t to swim lengths they can do. The food is wonderful and for a 'light lunch' there is plenty. Please don't change it Celtic Manor it is a wonderful plAce to come for a Spa Day.
excellent facilities, the day was booked by our daughters as a silver wedding present, the hot stone massage was a lovely experience, however the light lunch was a choice of soup followed by salad, maybe an improvement could be the offer of a jacket potato as if someone did not like salad then they would not be able to partake of part of the experience
The spa was very nice and the staff were very friendly. There seemed to be a lack of beds by the pool and it would also have been nice to have a communal steam room if you go with someone of a different gender.
The main issue was screaming kids! - they were allowed in the spa pool all afternoon-evening which seemed to completely defeat the point of a relaxing spa weekend. It would be a great venue to have adult only.
A lovely day of relaxation and being pampered - the herbal clay therapy was a great way of having a treatment with your friends and my skin feels amazing afterwards. All in all it was a fab way to spend the day.
The spa was absolutely beautiful, clean, with excellent service. Shame that spa breaks did not send across our booking and the spa did not have our booking on their system, however they accommodated is with no trouble at all!
Wonderful facial and massage, staff very warm and welcoming. Lovely relaxation room for after your treatment. Would def recommend the spa break experience.
Booked a spa day for my daughter and I. we found it lovely and relaxing. The only down side is Spa staff were so busy being a Saturday the customer service was not there the focus was mainly on the group booking making them happy. Other couples commented on this to us.The treatment was amazing we both loved it and we did relax.
The spa was great! I loved every aspect of these facilities, except when I was unable to access it, due to overcrowding. This did cause some inconvenience, but otherwise it was an amazing experience. I would recommend and definitely return if given the opportunity.
The best spa day I've ever had! I had the 50 min coconut summer revival treatment which consisted of a back scrub and massage, facial and head massage, followed by a gorgeous pina colada! My therapist was fantastic. The day felt like absolute bliss. I would definately recommend!
I had three treatments a mini facial that was very good, a pedicure that was good and a massage, the young lady who done the massage had only recently started and she did not stop talking all the way through very average, not quite what you want when you are trying to relax. The treatments are not cheap and I feel some of it was a waste of time and money. Nobody showed us around the facilities we missed out on the light lunch and used the snack area I ordered a Tuna and Cheese Panini, when it came there was hardly any filling and it had been warmed in a microwave it was awful and at a cost of nearly £7.00 I was not impressed so my all round experience was not a good one so I will not be going again. It is unlikely you will publish this review and if you do I am happy to put my name to it.
Massage and facial by Jade - she was lovely and the treatments were just what i needed. Spa was gorgeous. Calm and peaceful. I used the jacuzzi and pool. It was chaotic due to summer holidays but they do have adult only times!
Booking a sunset spa package at Celtic manor was supposed to be a relaxing experience for my two daughters for There birthdays
How awful it was
We will not be going back !!
My first Spa experience and all i can say is wow. The massage was so relaxing and very professional. The atmosphere was so relaxing and the swim after finished it off perfectly. Could of done with some more beds in the swimming pool area though.
Celtic Manor is a fantastic place to have a spa day. Unfortunately for us the steam room was out of action and the spa was so busy that we had to sit on the stone wall for all of our visit. It was not the relaxing experience we had hoped for. One of the spa therapists was however very helpful and gave us a spa day pass to use at another time. Hopefully our next visit will be the relaxing day we look forward to. Afternoon tea was lovely and we had complimentary Pimms and lemonade on arrival.
Never had massage before so apprehensive about it ( body in pain ) but Jane put me at ease.
Re the pool, found finding it a pain , the man at reception was not very helpful - no visible signs ,ie finding the towels and way to pool.
I was terribly disappointed. The Jacuzzi in the ladies area was not working. The large one in the main pool area was cold. The steam room in that area wasn't working. There was nowhere warm, cosy and quiet to relax with a magazine and we also never found anywhere where we could have bought a glass of champagne whilst waiting for our treatments. The therapists, however, were very good and gave us some lovely treatments.
The spa was very nice there were 10 of us and it was all well organised for the treatment but disappointed the jacuzzi was out of order but had a lovely time
The only downsides were the swimming pool area which could of done with some work to it, peeling paint on the ceilings. The light lunch wasn’t nice, most food tasted like vinegar.
But as for the spa facilities, the staff and the treatments 10/10!! The staff were amazing and very attentive.
As a party of ten we all very much enjoyed our spa day .
Although very busy and a little manic on arrival .
Once settled and in our robes ... we all had a super day .
Therapists were brill and we all very much enjoyed our treatments .
As the day came to an end , we really didn’t want to have to leave .
The spa was very busy. My therapist was late to collect me, spent quite a bit of time talking about my health checklist which had checked no serious conditions. The treatment itself felt rushed, the therapist spent what felt like long periods of time writing or doing nothing which was peculiar. She did not ask if the pressure was ok and also did not do things evenly - she forgot an arm and shoulder. The room was cold, towels thin not sure which. The time was short I was actually with the therapist for only 45 mins and some of that was talking and it should have been a 50 min treatment. The relaxation room was full of people on a hen weekend so we were unable to use it - but it was extremely brightly lit anyway and very small. Sadly whilst the rest of the spa and pool facilities looked great - it was heaving with guests and their children. There were at least six children trying to get in and out of the hot tub in the ladies area whilst their mum/aunt/grandma were in it. They were given bags of crisps and allowed to eat those around the spa area dropping crisps and climbing in and out of what was clearly marked and adult only area. It was not a relaxing spa experience at all.
We won a spa day through a Pizza Express competition. Spa Breaks contacted me and they were so helpful, they arranged the whole day for us.
The staff at Celtic manor were amazing as always and the day was perfect. We had full body deep tissue massages; the therapist was kind and knowledgeable. The only downside was the lunch included, it was just a cold salad buffet with no drinks included. Of course we didn’t mind as on this visit we hadn’t paid, but the lunch would be better if it was a limited choice menu.
I will definitely book through Spa Breaks again, all the correspondence was by email which suits my working hours. A completely stress free booking, would really like to compliment Emily Fowler who dealt with it all, thanks again!
Spa itself was wonderful, My mother and i booked into the herbal steam temple treatment. An amazing experience especially if you don't feel too comfortable with the hands on approach that comes with any massage. This is private and non intrusive. Not to mention incredible for your skin. Left feeling very rejuvenated.
However we were disappointing as we were unable to use the pool on our visit, due to it's closure. This was due to bad chlorine levels apparently. we were informed it would be open within a couple of hours, our spa stay lasted 6 hours and it was still not rectified on departure. Although i understand this was in keeping with health and safety regulations it was very disappointing, especially on paying for a 5* Spa experience.
The therapist was great and the facilities were great. Our massage was excellent and relaxing. Our spa was booked at 1:30pm after being told originally that it was cancelled. There was no communication after that so we went to the spa at 01:00 pm. We were then told that the afternoon tea is only served until 0300 pm so it meant that after our relaxing massage we then had to run to restaurant to have our tea. This also meant that we didn’t have enough time to use other facilities and to relax a bit longer. We were told that we had to get dressed when we’re going to eat. When we got to the restaurant, they were not aware of our booking. So had to tell them that we are having a spa day. I then had to remind and ask the waiters about our food after I noticed that others who arrived after us were already eating. We didn’t had our food till after quarter past 3. Meaning we waited for at least 30 minutes for assorted cold foods. Then our spa day ended.
The overall rating was 2 because of the above.
The spa and facilities were beautiful very relaxing atmosphere with lovely staff and beautyrooms the pool and surrounding areas were relaxing just a little moan though felt that the poolside could of had a few more loungers for guests to use but all in all fantastic nothing not to like really....
Wonderful massage by Sophie. One of the best I have ever had. My only complaint would be the size of the female changing area, just not wide enough for anyone to get changed without continually having to move out of people's way. Pool area was lovely but too busy for me however it was half term, we should have realised this when booking. The other bug bear was having to check out before out treatment, that wasn't ideal. However, I would return but maybe midweek and not in a school holiday!
During our spa experience we were meant to have lunch and chocolate strawberries and a glass of poscesso but nothing was offered to us. I ask about the lunch and was told we were to late.
Really enjoyed our time spent in the spa, although it does get quite busy so we couldn’t get any beds by the pool so check the peak times to plan your day
I think this spa is very over priced for what it is, since visiting aqua sana
At centre parcs it has made me realise how overpriced this Spa day actually was, considering we paid almost £300 when booking to then find that there were additional charges. £9 for parking in their carpark, i was completely gobsmacked that this was not included for spa day users and then The lunch that was included was disgraceful in the forum spa cafe as part of the package, stale bread and a very small choice of things that looked like it had been sat around for days. As this cafe only served sandwiches and jacket potatos i was pretty disappointed to find that you could not choose something off the menu and had to have the shambles in the corner. A soft drink wasnt even Included it was simply the just of tap Water over at the buffet. I do not find that was good enough for a £300 day out. The sauna and pool were pretty average compared to other spa days i have been to and found there wasnt really much to do. Overall i will definitely not be visiting Celtic Manor Spa again and would definitely rebook Aqua sana centre parcs instead!
A lovely experience at Celtic Manor. The spa treatments are superb. Pool area very spacious with plenty of beds to relax. The only thing which was disappointing was the food all very 'healthy' but tasteless, particularly the soup. I have visited many spa's this one is first class. I will definitely be back.
the pool is amazing!shame the steam room was shut when visiting and one of the jacuzzis was not very hot.
the massage I had was lovely though at the spa.A lovely afternoon spent relaxing.
The spa was amazing and nice and warm if you came out of the water you wouldn't be cold, me and my friend booked in for treatments and they were amazing the girls would make you feel really relaxed and made sure everything was okay throughout, we were also shown the products that were used just case we wanted to buy any and talked us through them on how they work, over all we were very happy:)
Spa facilities - steam room was out of order, which was a shame, did marr the day a little.
Food - really tasty food, but plates and cutlery taken so couldn’t go up for more!
Treatments - absolutely fantastic. Simon, the masseuse was brilliant and gave me some really good advice which has stuck with me.
I had a wonderful spa day at The Celtic Manor. It is a beautiful place which makes it easy to relax. I had an amazing facial which included a really relaxing face, hand/arm and scalp massage. The therapist showed me all the products she had used, but I felt no obligation to buy any. A lovely buffet lunch was included and there was complimentary water and tea (lots of varieties) available all the time.
It was more expensive than some spa days but worth it for a special occasion or as a gift for a special treat.
As you can see from my ratings my daughter had a lovely day at Celtic Manor. We had a 50 minute treatment and chose to have a neck and back massage and a facial.
My therapist was called Kate and I really enjoyed both treatments and felt thoroughly pampered and relaxed at the end of it.
Our lunch was buffet style, which again was really good with plenty to choose from.
There were plenty of loungers and places to relax after enjoying a swim, soak in jacuzzi and sauna but unfortunately steam room wasn't working.
Next time maybe we will include an overnight stay but sure there will be a next time.
Friendly helpful staff. Late dinner buffet in Olive tree which was not great as some of the food was a bit dry and over baked. Breakfast early was good.
I can’t thank to all enough for the wonderful welcome and the hospitality The hotel , food and spa was amazing will definitely be arranging another visit . A big thank you to Nicola who helped me arrange our wonderful experience. Xx
We arrived on New Year’s Day, if you are looking for a relaxing spa / hotel experience this is not the day to arrive on, the hotel was more like a Disney resort than a five star spa.
The facilities themselves are great although the restaurants and bars are somewhat over priced, £4.55 for a small Late or cappuccino does make you feel like you are being ripped off and not offering the same at breakfast unless you pay another £4.55 each is penny pinching, I’ve never stayed in a hotel of this star rating before and been charged for cappuccino when you’ve already paid for breakfast, also charging residents £18 per night for car parking when you are stuck out in the middle of nowhere and have to drive there is not on and was not mentioned at the initial booking phase, that more than anything made us feel like we were just being milked for every penny (management take note).
The pool area is really nice, the changing rooms are modern and the sauna and steam rooms very clean, unfortunately the whole area is not very well policed, there really should be more adults only time allocated to this facility, this is not beating down on people with families or kids themselves but in our case we came away for a relaxing three day break and the pool on the first day was something akin to being at your local family pool on a bank holiday.
With regards to it not being policed properly I have respect for everyone’s beliefs and religions but I do not want to be in a pool where people are fully clothed head to toe, I’ll leave that one there before I insight political arguments.
The ice skating ring was a great feature but impossible to get on, it was so busy with so many families in attendance we decided to give it a miss especially when the staff couldn’t tell us what time they had vacancies for and how much it would cost, apparently the cost rises and falls depending on how busy they are ???, we didn’t understand that either.
Our second day there was so much better than the first, the hotel was a lot quieter and so it took on the feel of a relaxing spa break.
We had one treatment each (a full massage) in the Spa and I have to say it was top notch, the staff were knowledgable and friendly and the massage itself was superb, highly recommended.
Our room was also first class, clean and comfortable with a very comfortable bed that we struggled to get out of !.
Would I recommend the Celtic Manor for a relaxing spa break or a great place to stay when passing through?, yes I would but just make sure your bank account is well stocked and you don’t book for the premium dates unless you are going there with the whole family and want to keep the kids entertained for which it’s perfect.
8/10
There were a few issues that i took up with the hotel on leaving, little things that would have improved our experience but nothing major. However i was charged £18 to park when all the information i received stated £15 - and i also double checked with Reception on leaving the premises so was a bit annoyed at that. I have e-mailed this complaint to them.
Overall it was a nice and relaxing stay. The facilities were good and the room was very comfortable. Car parking was overpriced and staff friendliness varied a fair amount.
Firstly, let me start by saying I had an amazing stay at the Celtic Manor. The main purpose of the trip was to relaxing and unwind with my wife, after a stressful year. The trip did exactly this and I would definitely return. The food was great and the spa very relaxing. I would definitely recommend for anyone wanting a spa retreat.
That said, there were a few things that meant I had to mark this trip down and I will list them now.
1. Charging for the car park, £6 per night. Now I know a lot of hotels charge for parking and that £6 per night is quite competitive, but for me this is a big no no!
2. This one is down to personal preference, but I just couldn't get comfortable with the pillows supplied. They were too thin, so using one pillow was too low, but using two pillows was too high. I ended up with very little sleep on the first night and a bit of a sore neck.
3. On the Sunday I was unable to access the pool / spa facilities between 4pm - 6pm due to overcrowding. This caused a few issues, as I was meant to be meeting my wife in there and she'd been allowed access. In the end I had to go back to the hotel room and wait for her to return, as I was the only one with a key card. It meant I wasted some of the afternoon.
I have been to the Celtic Manor many times over the years as I live very clos by, my stay this time was very disappointing, the Hotel needs some updating and there were areas that are not as clean as it should be, changing rooms toilets
Spa areas. Rooms were fine, the service in the Olive Tree was appalling, very young staff badly trained, an example we asked for tea and coffee after the dinner, the tea came no cups or tea spoons we asked for the cups and it was cups we got no saucers or teaspoons it was like being in a road side cafe, food was very average. it was a treat for my sister who is on holiday from Australia and she was surprised how the Celtic Manor standards have gone down. I will not be rushing back any day soon.
Warm welcome on arrival, and our room was ready an hour early which was fab! Huge, comfortable room with views over the motorway onto Newport. All facilities were clean and presentable. Staff were kind and attentive. Absolutely perfect
Mostly good, requires a few more seats in the reception area, as I can’t stand for long , so I could have sat down to wait for my husband to book in . Quite cold in the lounge area too - doors left open and people going out to smoke. In rafters on request arranged for us to sit by window
The room was dirty and dated. The thing that was the most annoying was the prices of the food and drinks. It was simply ridiculous the price they charge. You expect to pay a little more than average but not be made a fool out of. Having to pay for the car park after spending 100s of £ is also a bit naughty. I would never recommend the Celtic Manor to anyone.
We loved our room on the 8th floor. Magnificent views, spacious and well equipped, eventually we found the ice! The hotel, however, was very cold. The bar and restaurant area were not warm and even the spa area was disappointingly cold.
It was to celebrate a friends 60 th Birthday the Hotel was lovely Staff were very friendly and helpful, massage was really good bit disappointed the jacuzzi was out of order but we all had a great time beautiful grounds
Excellent standard of rooms and the hotel ambiance is lovely .
Very good value for money and super meal in the Olive Garden .
Service at breakfast was not great , it was a lovely breakfast . Just waited a very long time for drinks .
Lovely accommodation, really clean only thing that key it down was the room was way to hot, I couldn’t sleep most the night due to this and the other thing was we had drinks in the bar and because the lady walked us over to the table and passed us our drink menu we had to pay a table service charge which I thought was disgusting.
Other than that I enjoyed myself, food was Lovely and all the staff was really friendly.
Having been to this resort my times on business and golf trips it seemed the automatic choice fro my wife and I to celebrate the week end at Celtic manor for a joint spa weekend. What a disaster and how very disappointed we were. The food in the hotel was bland and cold but the best thing was the joint spa. My wife had her massage and treatment but unfortunately my masseur did not turn up so mine didn't happen, so it was postponed. So our 30 wedding anniversary treat to out selves didn't happen. NOT HAPPY GUESTS
Very helpful staff right from the start and beautiful surroundings the hotel was beautiful and well maintained the rooms are decorated to a very high standard and cleanliness was imaculate very peaceful night's sleep on very very company beds...
Rooms great ( though a little dated), food wonderful, staff have great customer focus, we were looked after in the restaurant by Owen and Custudio, ammeneties excellent
Hotel was really comfortable, hairdryer took some working out! Our evening meal was fabulous, our waiter Custodio was very kind organised a glass of champagne for my daughter. Great food choices, and considering amount of people there, plentiful amounts of good quality hot food. Waiting staff, as were all the staff, very attentive.
The accommodation was excellent but lack of communication meant that there was no room booked for us when we arrived. Luckily because we had to wait for the mess to be sorted the hotel booked us in and upgraded us but it was a very unfortunate start !!!
Our stay was great. We had a lovely time and the hotel was very nice. Had an issue at the end when they ask us to pay when we had already paid online through spa breaks but they didn’t have any record of this
very comfortable hotel.the room was huge with amazing views over the golf course.the staff were all very helpful and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble.the buffet breakfast and evening meal was great with lots of choice.
The hotel was absolutely amazing soon as you walk in, the decoration were amazing, the only problem we had was that we had dirty bath robs that still had dry food on them, we didn't have a kettle or any cups to have a drink or water with other wise you have to pay the price of the mini bar , also there was a man in the check in point that was very rude and spoke down to me, all I wanted was to ask a couple of questions as I have never been there before but still didn't get the help, I found that we missed most of the stuff that went on at the hotel as things wasn't sign posted e.g we also seen to eating places and 1 bar but through pictures we seen only there were more but she didn't know where but couldn't find any staff to ask, other than that the food was amazing for evening meal and breakfast, we also bad a really good view from our hotel room, over all the stay was ok but for how top notch I thought it was going to be it just seem liked an average hotel for me.
The bar smelt of sick
The food was average
The decor needs updating
It’s a five star hotel and we had to pay £15 for car parking???
The room was nice.
The staff weren’t interested when we said our stay was ‘ok’.
Won’t be going back
What a great relaxing experience in such a beautiful hotel. The staff were great and the hotel was amazing! Thank you very much! Definitely will be going back there.
Hotel room and the spa facilities were good however I feel like i was miss-sold the dinner as was sold as a 3 course meal only to find it was a buffet. We don’t do buffets at all. Quality was poor so we could not find anything we liked so the experience was spoiled!
