A beautiful country house hotel near Hatfield Heath, Down Hall is in a wonderfully convenient location close to London, airports and transport links. The building dates back to 1322 and retains its sense of grandeur with Italianate details, ornate ceilings and an abundance of natural daylight. Set in 110 acres of surrounding woodland, parkland and landscaped gardens, accommodation has been decorated with both a nod to modern expectations as well as a real sense of the hotel’s history whether you stay in a classic room or one of the opulent suites.
Dining provides a multiplicity of options, with The Grill Room at the centre of the experience offering award-winning cuisine and using vegetables sourced from the hotel’s own gardens. A traditional afternoon tea can be taken in the Lounge or Ibbotson’s Tea Lounge, picnics are available in the summer, and Sunday lunches and in-room dining are also available.
The Spa is excellent. Clean and well run by wonderful staff.. Every one of them was attentive and our experience was a relaxing one. The treatments, were on time and well executed by professional and pleasant ladies..
Lovely treatments and atmosphere in the spa, lovely and quiet. No conditioner in the shower, no offer of drinks or water unless you asked, floors could be cleaner. Afternoon tea option was in a lovely setting, great cup of tea and beautifully light scones. Some of the vegetarian sandwich fillings were so cold they had ice crystals on!
We then made our way to the spa, excited and so looking forward to being pampered and enjoy some precious ‘me time’. On entry, the spa was very crowded with no seats available to sit anywhere and we waited to speak with the lady at the desk. We were greeted with ‘Oh you’re late… well you won’t have your allocated 2 hours in the spa now and you won’t be able to come back after your treatments either….’ We were rather disappointed at the lack of warmth and unwelcoming manner of all the staff in the spa. The spa is incredibly small – probably the smallest spa facilities I have ever been to. We hadn’t realised there was no swimming pool and this was a further disappointment. There was a bubble/hot tub, a sauna, a steam room and a ‘relaxation room’ but with only 4 beds! The changing facilities were also very small, the robes were very rough. We had about 45 minutes in the spa before then going for our package treatments.
My allocated staff member was OK but just again not particularly warm or friendly. It would be beneficial for the therapists to remember that for many of us, having a spa treatment is such a treat and we are looking forward to it so much, that their manner and the way they are with clients matter enormously to the overall experience. The therapist gave me a facial which I enjoyed but I have to say not as much as I have done on the previous few occasions I have experienced a facial.
Overall, the whole spa team lacked customer service skills and did not have a good manner. The spa waiting room was crowded and there weren’t enough chairs. There is no flexibility on the time in the spa.
We had a great time in the spa, the staff were super helpful. Most of us had great treatments but a couple of our group didn't have the best experience, however we had a great time, it was a shame it was raining as would have been great to use the seats outside.
Our spa treatments were amazing, the staff were lovely and friendly, they only thing I found fault with was that the floor in the seating area looked like it needed a good mop, but that could just be where people were coming to and from the water areas.
We had the 2 hour wet spa followed by a facial. The wet spa was great especially as we were on our own! We could take our time using each section of the wet spa. Staff were helpful especially the lady who met us and showed us round and then brought us tea in the relaxation room. We did not have food here so am not able to comment on this! We will certainly return, we have stayed at a number of other spa's and this is one of the best we feel.
Fabulous experience, the hotel room had everything we required. Spotlessly clean. with very attentive staff. Every aspect was five star. The Spa experience was perfect.. The treatments given at the exact time. All I would have liked was more Vegan choices in the evening meal.. otherwise PERFECT.. will be returning with my Partner in the Summer.. Thank you to all the staff.. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
Mixed staff where pleasant but service at lunch was very slow. There was lots of noise at night (some issue in the loft) which kept everyone on our floor awake from 4am staff did resolve but after 2 hours and several calls
My sister and I had been looking forward to our special spa treat (a present from our nephew) all year. Unfortunately, we did not have an amazing experience - it was extremely disappointing to say the least – especially for my sister had travelled hours to get there from Reading and had to make special arrangements for her husband to take the take off work to look after their little one.
There is no doubt that the hotel is an impressive building and approach; set back and reached by a long driveway it looks pretty amazing and very luxurious on arrival. Unfortunately for us we joined a check-in queue of 25 American visitors who must have just been dropped off prior to our arrival. With this many people to check in, it was a shame the hotel reception staff did not receive some extra support to ensure everyone (including us) did not have to wait as long as they did. We had a strict time limit in the spa and this waiting time held us up considerably.
When we did reach reception, the staff member was very pleasant and dealt with us in a good manner. We dropped out bags into our room (129) which was a very luxurious room, great space and all very plush. The bathroom was excellent and very spacious with a shower and bath facilities. The bed linen was lovely and the beds are good. Although we only overlooked the car park, the rooms facilities and décor were excellent.
Dinner at the hotel: the staff on duty were very poorly trained; we were not asked to taste the wine; there was extremely small choice of dinners on the hotel menu; we were not advised that our voucher could not be put towards beverages. The staff did not ask if our food was OK or afterwards or even If we had enjoyed our meals – they simply didn’t seem to care and were there just doing a job (but not very well). Having decided that we both fancied the Norfolk Skate wing we gave our order to the waitress to be told she had just served the last one to the American table. We really were stumped at what to then order from the menu, as the choice was so limited and I ended up asking for the bar menu which had some alternatives. I asked if the chips were made on site and was told that yes the fat chips are made on site although the skinny fries that come with the burger were not. I ordered the haddock and chips (expecting fat chips – having had this discussion) and my sister ordered the steak and ale pie and vegetables. Our meals arrived, mine with skinny fries! It was just mediocre – definitely had better and so disappointing that the fish and chips did not even come with peas! My sisters meal however was good.
We were asked to ‘sign out’ of the restaurant, however due to (another) queue of Americans all individually paying for their meals we decided that as we were staying overnight and coming back there in the morning, we would see the hotel staff about our dinner then. Back to the rooms for a relax in our P.J’s . Telephone rang in our room asking us to immediately come down t
I had an amazing stay at at this Hotel. I upgraded to an Executive suite, very comfortable bed , nice clean room with lovely views. The tv was bit dated, and some of the furnishings were dated too. I popped down to the new outside bar area for a glass of wine , I waited for a while but there wasn't anybody serving so I had to go o the inside bar. I paid £5.50 for a small glass of red and popped back to my room. Room service is great and I had a lovely meal. Breakfast was pretty good to. All staff were welcoming and polite. The wifi is great all around the Hotel apart from the Spa area. I had an amazing facial with the ESPA products. I will be back soon with the dogs as I find this Hotel one of the most relaxing that I've been too.
The hotel was beautiful and everything we needed for a long needed date night away from home without the children. The only fault I found was there were flies in between our room windows and the sliding windows, which we forgot to mention to reception. They weren’t harming us as they weren’t actually in the room but still wasn’t nice.
But overall everything else was perfect
We stayed one night in a lovely room with all the amenities we needed. We had lunch in the bar, this was a very nice lunch but the bar is affected by people walking through to other areas including a very large group obviously at a conference. No problem was just a bit disruptive. New staff in the bar being trained. We ate in the Grill room, fantastic dinner and then good breakfast the next morning too. Perfect poached eggs! This spa was a treat/Xmas present that I shared with my sister
