Built in 1705 as a manor house for Lady Dowager of Torence Castle, this hotel just outside Glasgow is set amongst 37 acres of countryside and has been extended in more recent years to accommodate conference facilities and 70 contemporary bedrooms.

Unfortunately we could not attend the spa day as my mum was rushed into hospital on the morning of the spa day . It was a gift for her 80th birthday. I left a message on the answerphone explaining the situation and asked someone to call me to discuss however no one came back to me which has left me feeling completely dissatisfied. A call would have been appreciated even if just to confirm I would not be able to re-book at a later stage. I’m not inclined to book or recommend your service since your staff could not even do me the courtesy of returning my call.

Having visited the steam room on the fri, we went back on sat pre treatments and unfortunately there was a problem with shower temperature, which I think may have affected the steam room as it was no where near as hot as before.
Communication with reception at spa wasn't great as we weren't really directed properly and had to ask a lot of questions. Claire was the lady who did all of our treatments and she was fabulous. Would definitely recommend asking for her.

The spa was nicer than the rest of the hotel , the massage was good, but not great, after the treatment we were just left not knowing what to do . we were told we would get tea in the relaxation room, but no one even looked in on us. I have been at much better spas and would not rush back. The pool area was nice, although most folk were commenting on how cold the water was.

There was an issue the night before we arrived at the spa for our treatments because there was a mistake somewhere from someone not passing on confirmations and there was only 8 of us booked in when there should have been 11 so our treatment times got changed to fit us all in which was great of them to do but we were on a hen and had plans and also I was told “I was lucky there was space” which is unprofessional for one but this wasn’t my fault and I had paid a lot of money for all the hen group to come to this spa for the day.
Some of us had great treatments and others the therapists spoke through their treatments and the girls who did have this happen to them were not happy and I don’t blame them. Therapists should ask at the start and I actually believe therapists shouldn’t speak throughout any treatment as its meant to be relaxing and chill time for an individual and good money been spent on this.
Facilities were okay but swimming pool was absolutely freezing, would be good if a jacuzzi could be built in. And maybe some heated seats also as relaxation room isn’t big enough when there’s a few people coming out of treatments.

Having been here a few years ago was really disappointed in how run down the pool are is now, the toilet next to the pool was filthy with mould growing on the taps and pipes and everywhere needed some freshening up. Our afternoon tea was delicious but was half an hour late meaning we had to stuff it in quickly before our treatments started. The staff were all lovely, couldn't fault them and treatment was fab but overall think I will look elsewhere next time.

Excellent stay at this hotel. My 3 friends and I stayed on a Fri. We arrived around 3.30pm and checked in. Our twin bedrooms were very comfortable and clean if a little dated.
We went straight to the pool and utilised the sauna and steam room whilst we waited on friends arriving.
Whilst waiting on friends I phoned down for a bucket of ice, which was brought immediately.
Dinner was booked for 6.30, the restaurant was quite quiet but soon got busy. Over all the food was very nice, but unfortunately the two steaks ordered were over cooked and my friend ordered a chorizo dish. Unfortunately my friend had to pull 3/4 bits of plastic out of her mouth. Unfortunately the clear plastic wrapping seemed to have been left on. We did say to staff, as nice as they were nothing was offered in way of compensating for the mistakes.

This was my first visit to the MacDonald Hotel and will also be my last. On entering the grounds of the hotel it was lovely, however that thought dissapeared as soon as i walked through the front door. I appreciate that this is an old style country house hotel, but the decor was a joke, it just felt very dark, dingy, old fashioned and depressing. The hotel is in much need of a refurb and brighter more modern colours used. The staff pleasant but not very attentative and not once were we asked how things were,we were not even asked at check out how our stay had been, which i found strange. service in the bar and restaurant were slow and uncaring. The prices were the most expensive nd most ridiculous i have ever experinced, I stayed in Kennsington London last year and the MacDonald was more expensive !!!On a plus the pool is very good and the Spa area is more modern and pleasant,but again not very attentative, staff continued to chat as we stood at reception waiting to be served. Overall i would NOT recommend this hotel :(

I had a very relaxing time at this hotel but the single room was very small. I would say the hotel is set out nicely but it needs updating. The shower was very out dated. The hotel was set on a lot of land but it would have been beneficial for there to be a bike track on the land as the hotel leads to a very busy road.

When we arrived the lady at the desk didn’t ask if we’d already been booked in for dinner so our booked time was apparently “full” however she took my name and seen we had been.
Went and dealt with the issue at the spa (this review is below).
Went for dinner once we were all ready and the staff were unprofessional moaning about things as we walked in, this was a busy time as a wedding and an 80th birthday party was in however no customers fault and shouldn’t have happened in front of customers. The “fully booked” restaurant didn’t look very full and there was lots of empty tables however we were sat right next to a door that was being used for serving others whether this was the 80th or someone else I don’t know, however my friend was nearly hit in the end of numerous occasions and we all felt very on edge with big huge trays, food and drinks constantly been run right past us and out this door we were sat right next to.
The waiter who served us obviously hated his job, I don’t think he smiled once, was very off putting and didn’t take much to do with our table unless he served food to it or we asked for something. Service with a smile and manners go a long way.
The food was lovely but could have been heated up a bit more, wasn’t very hot but it was edible. We waited ages for our bill and the waitress eventually took over who was much nicer, and then the manager came over and we did tell him a couple of our issues to which he gave us 2 free bottles of Prosecco which was lovely of him to do however we shouldn’t have had to have been disappointed for that to happen.
It just seemed to be one thing after another and the organiser of then who being myself was under enough stress and pressure without having to deal with either spa breaks themselves or the hotel with several mistakes and disappointments when trying to please and give a bride to be a nice hen.

The deal was good value for money however I was disappointed that the sauna did not work. This was one of the main reasons for me booking an overnight spa experience. The treatment lasted 20 minutes instead of 25. There was a foul smell in the restaurant. It was there in the evening when we had dinner and also at breakfast. I think the upholstery or carpet needs to be cleaned to rid of the smell. The decor of the hotel is quite tired and needs updated.

The hotel is in need of upgrading and in particular our room was in very poor shape with pieces of furniture very worn and ripped and the bath rusty at the plug. We ordered coffee and sandwiches on arrival and after waiting a long time to be served the sandwiches arrived 20 minutes after the coffee. Overall the staff were friendly and welcoming.
