Read full postIn a countryside setting close to Chester, Macdonald Portal Golf and Spa Resort has all the hallmarks of the nationwide brand - warm, welcoming, excellent standards and a unique location. Here are just five of the reasons we love it...
The hotel is the perfect balance between traditional hospitality and contemporary style. Rooms and suites are comfortable and relaxing peppered with details like tartan throws and ELEMIS toiletries, and all looking out onto tranquil views of the grounds.
Golf and spa are something of a leisurely match made in heaven and at Macdonald Portal they go all out on this marriage. There's not one, but three golf courses at the resort, including the 18-hole Championship and Premier Golf Courses and 9-hole Arderne course. Whatever standard you play to, it's a beautiful place to get out and have a go.
The purpose-built health club, set within the grounds of the hotel, is a dedicated space for working out and winding down. There's state-of-the-art Life Fitness gym equipment in the Vital Leisure Club, alongside a swimming pool, aroma steam room, infra red sauna, rock sauna, two experience showers and an ice room. After preparing mind, body and soul, head to the spa area for a luxurious ELEMIS treatment (or two).
Honouring the heritage of the surrounding area, the Salt Brasserie is the main restaurant at Macdonald Portal. It’s believed the Romans started to extract rock salt using salt pans and brine kilns in Northwich in the 1st century AD, and to this day the largest rock salt mine in the UK is in Winsford, close to the hotel.
Macdonald Portal might feel as though it's in the middle of the countryside, and it is, but it's also a fantastic base from which to explore the surrounding area. Guests delight in nearby attractions including the Medieval Beeston Castle, regarded as one of the most dramatic ruins in the English landscape, the Delamere Forest, historic Chester and the pretty village at Tarporley.
