From work placement to career fast-track

We celebrate one team member who joined us for work experience and is now heading off for her dream job.

At Spabreaks.com we like to nurture our team members and we like to celebrate one another's wins - even when it means watching them fly the nest. This month, we're particularly excited for our Marketing Executive, Lucia.

Having joined us for a summer internship two years ago while at university, she has since become a full-time member of the team, tailoring her job role to ensure she could learn as much as possible during her time with us.

Now, as she heads off for the next stage in her career development, we look at her journey from intern to integral team member and beyond.

Undergraduate work experience

Lucia joined Spabreaks.com in 2021 on an eight week summer internship during the university holidays. She was studying for a degree in marketing at the University of Sussex at the time. When the eight week period was over, our Marketing Manager, Lauren, asked if she wanted to continue for the summer, which then led to a part-time job while she completed the third year of her degree.

She says: "The other job I had been doing while at university wasn't related to my degree. I loved it at Spabreaks.com and it was wonderful to have the chance to do something in marketing while I studied. I wanted to learn as much as possible and the team gave me lots of tasks across a really broad spectrum of marketing areas. I learned a lot more by having actual experience alongside education and I think I also learned to time manage really well by having a job whilst being at uni, which helped me in both areas."

A full-time job after university

After Lucia finished her degree she was keen to stay in Brighton for another year, and the team at Spabreaks.com were eager to find her a role that suited her as a full time member of staff.

She says: "Lauren asked me what I wanted to do within marketing and we spoke about how I would probably only stay in Brighton for one more year. She asked what would help me progress with my career, which is amazing because you never get that kind of opportunity in your first job. I said what I liked doing and what I wanted to learn, what I was thinking about and what I wanted to do after Spabreaks.com. The company was so helpful and I know it has helped me get the job that I’m going onto now. They’ve been so accommodating - I love working here and with everyone as well, so it's bittersweet to be moving on. It’s so crazy to think this internship that I applied for has helped me massively."

Next steps on the career ladder

Now, Lucia is preparing to head off to London at the end of the summer with a role in digital marketing within the Frasers Group.

She says: "I’ve learned so much at Spabreaks.com. I’ve definitely become more confident and it’s made me very comfortable about sharing my opinion, especially when I first joined. In meetings the team would encourage me to speak up and give my thoughts as a fresh pair of eyes. It's easy to think that people are older than me and know more than me, but it was nice to be valued for my own input. I've also loved seeing how the company has changed and grown coming out of the pandemic. Moving to London is exciting and I'm looking forward to it, but I'm going to miss the team here. I will definitely stay in touch and look forward to seeing what my replacement does with the job!"
