Around a decade ago, the esteemed Clinical Nutritionist, Stephanie Moore, spoke to us about gut health. At the time, she worked (in part) at Grayshott Spa, a health spa destination which sadly closed its doors after the pandemic.
Netflix introduces you to gut health
Stephanie remains an instrumental influence within the spa and wellbeing sector, and she was an early advocate of the importance of looking after our gut. Today, gut health is more mainstream - recognised and discussed by lots more people. Perhaps as a mark of its permeation into more general discussion, it's recently appeared as the focus of Netflix's Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut.
Lighthearted but informative, whether you have been talking about gut health or not, the documentary is certainly a conversation starter. Delving into the digestive system and its role in our overall wellbeing, it might not give you all the information you need to make informed decisions, but it's a great starting point for anyone who is curious about the different aspects of wellbeing.
What the critics say
If you're contemplating watching it, so far it has good reviews. The bit about faecal transplants is a bit sensationalist, but perhaps makes a strong illustrative point.
Rotten Tomatoes gives it mixed reviews - most are five star but one or two point to some of its limitations, which really serves as a reminder that a documentary is always going to offer truncated insights. Their critic sums it up (with a penchant for puns) saying:
"Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut feeds us reasonably informative and useful sh** in an easily digestible form."
As for us, we found it entertaining and a good introduction to pique your interest in gut health, but would suggest using it as a launchpad for gaining more knowledge and drawing your own conclusions.
