The town of Buxton in Derbyshire has a history that spans everything from the Stone Age to the Edwardians, but perhaps it's most famous thanks to the Romans who established a settlement based around the natural spring waters. They built baths and a temple at the site, believing the waters to have healing properties. Today, that heritage lives on, having been formalised in a thriving spa tradition, epitomised in The Buxton Crescent Hotel and its beautiful Ensana spa.
Historic architecture
The Buxton Crescent Hotel sits on an elegant Georgian crescent defined by honey coloured local stone and Regency architecture. Built in the 1780s and designed by John Carr of York, it's reminiscent of Bath's famous style, and was commissioned by the fifth Duke of Devonshire as part of a master plan to put the once small town on the map. It consists of three curved segments of townhouses, and was once described by the writer Mark Girouard as ‘like the Colosseum turned inside out’.
A five-star hotel
Today, the hotel retains the grandeur of its past alongside the expectations and excellence of contemporary five-star hospitality. Rooms and suites feature modern interiors and amenities, whilst celebrating heritage colours, rich fabrics and spectacular views onto the gardens and across the Buxton Slopes through vast sash windows.
