Where did it come from, what's it really about, and how can you make the most of it?
Far be it from us to need a reason to celebrate our best friends, but as Galentine's has gained momentum over the years, we became curious as to the source of this unexpectedly beautiful occasion. It appears to have largely gained traction from Amy Poehler's Parks and Recreation TV series, where the comedian's character, Leslie Knope, coined the term 'Galentine's Day' when gathering a group of her friends together at a local diner.
When asked, what it is, she says:
“What’s Galentine’s Day? It’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”
Can't argue with that!
Since then, the notion has gained traction, as women use the day to acknowledge the strength of their female friendships. Whether you're enjoying your singledom or leaving partners at home, this is one day where you can celebrate me, myself and my besties (not that it needs to be limited to a single day).
From quality time with friends to solo spa breaks for self-care or a wellbeing gift for your girls that you know they won't buy for themselves, take a breath and preserve that feminine energy this Galentine's Day. After all, it's only the best day of the year.
The number one girl in your life absolutely should be you, so first up on the list of celebratory options is taking care of yourself for the day. Book the solo spa day, buy the dress, take the full hour at lunch, go to the class you wanted to go to or ask your (second) favourite person to brunch for a little quality time together.
The day was very much created in celebration of the women we love in our lives, so what would make the perfect gift? Where would they like to go, what would they like to do, what do they never give to themselves that they truly deserve?
The ultimate way to spend Galentine's Day however, is in true Leslie Knope style - spending time with your favourite women and enjoying yourself at the same time. Our personal preference is a spa day, a spa evening or even a spa weekend.
