Wedding planning: the best ways to spend a pre-wedding night

Have you ever wondered what Meghan Markle must have been thinking the night before her wedding?

wedding planning

Like any other bride, Markle presumably took some time to gather her thoughts and spend quality time with her mum and closest friends. It is said she did so at the exquisite Relais & Chateau property, Cliveden House in Berkshire.

It was an appropriate nod to here and Prince Harry’s union, given that the hotel has connections both to British royalty and American history as the former home of American millionaire William Waldorf Astor.

In fact today, spa treatments are named as an ode to Astor’s wife Nancy - a powerhouse not unlike the new Countess of Sussex in that she was known for her politics; she was the first female Member of Parliament to take her seat.

Nonetheless, Meghan made her pre-wedding plans with intent and class, as any bride would hope to do. Calm and meditative preparation seems to be the order of the day, the day before a wedding, according to those in the know.

For example, Wedding Ideas Magazine notes the fundamental benefits of time to wash your hair in advance of seeing your hairdresser, and doing any last minute beauty preparations and finishing touches such as manicures and pedicures (never underestimate the relaxing properties of a twilight treatment).

Meanwhile Conde Nast Brides provides a wider brief, ranging from drinking lots of water and eating a healthy meal to getting an early night and putting your phone on silent to make sure you aren’t disturbed in the night.

However you spend the evening, the setting will make all the difference, and while home might be a nice and relaxed environment for some, for many going to a hotel provides a sense of occasion and excitement to really get the party started.

Cliveden House, Berkshire

As mentioned, the chosen location of the new Duchess of Sussex’s own pre-wedding night, Cliveden is elegant, peaceful and preferred by royalty, so you know you’re in good company when you come here. It’s luxury status would also make it an idyllic place to return post-nuptials for your first night as man and wife.

Pennyhill Park Hotel and Spa, Surrey

This five star hotel has a spa within the grounds that repeatedly outranks most other spa destinations. It has all the facilities you could possibly ask for as well we privacy and seclusion, but it also feels personal and boutique. Many a bride chooses to get married here as well, you can even say your vows in the beautiful gardens. For the night before the wedding, settle in with your closest friends for treatments and pampering (the spa is open ’til late)- there’s plenty of room in the thermal facilities after all!

Alexander House

Alexander House Hotel Utopia Spa, West Sussex

A five star celebrity favourite with a luxurious spa, this is all about pampering and so it is the perfect place to get those finishing touches done. The location is peaceful but will give you a sense of being queen for the day, and if you want a moment to catch your breath the grounds are beautiful for a stroll.

Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa, Cumbria

In a 400 acre estate in the Lake District, Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa is definitely a place that offers all the experiences you could ask for on your pre wedding night and your wedding night. Spend time with your mum and bridesmaids the night before - enjoying the spa facilities and the location with lots of space. Settle into your suite before you bring your new husband back to share in the luxury, and dine on the most impeccable breakfast with lake views to recount your big day with him the following morning.

Swinton Park, Yorkshire

The ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton is happily somewhere you would spend a whole week, so maybe book this place for a few days. This has the dual benefit of being exceptionally romantic, huge (in case you want to have your wedding reception here too for minimal travel), and it has a brand new spa which opened in 2017.As a result, it is a world-class facility where you can do all your pre-wedding beauty prep in one place, as well as your post wedding relaxation. Just imagine the wedding photos here!
