What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The term comes from two Japanese words: 'Rei' meaning 'universal' or 'spiritual wisdom', and 'Ki' meaning 'life energy'. It's similar to 'chi' in Chinese or 'prana' in Sanskrit.
The practice is based on the idea that this life energy flows through all living things and that disruptions or imbalances can contribute to physical or emotional distress.
How does Reiki work?
During a Reiki session, a practitioner channels healing energy through their hands to the recipient, either by lightly touching the body or by hovering their hands just above it. The goal is to encourage the natural flow of energy, remove blockages, and restore balance.
While the process may sound mystical, many people describe the experience as deeply relaxing and peaceful. Recipients often report sensations such as warmth, tingling, or a feeling of lightness during the session.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Research on Reiki is still in its infancy, but lots of studies and anecdotal evidence suggests several potential benefits (it's also a very soothing experience). These include:
- Stress reduction and relaxation: Reiki is best known for its calming effects, helping the body shift from fight or flight mode into a state of rest and healing.
- Emotional wellbeing: Many find that Reiki helps reduce anxiety, grief, and emotional fatigue.
- Pain management: Some research indicates that Reiki may help relieve pain, particularly when used alongside medical treatments.
- Improved sleep: Regular sessions can promote better rest and relaxation.
- Enhanced spiritual awareness: For some, Reiki is also a path to mindfulness, clarity, and a sense of peace.
It’s important to note that Reiki is a complementary therapy — it does not replace medical treatment but can be used alongside conventional care to support overall wellness.
What can you expect in a Reiki session?
A typical Reiki session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You’ll usually lie fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your body. The environment is calm and quiet, often with soft music and dim lighting to enhance relaxation.
After the session, people tend to feel relaxed, refreshed, or even emotionally lighter. Occasionally, people experience mild fatigue or emotional release as the body adjusts.
Safety and considerations
Reiki is non-invasive, gentle, and considered safe for all ages. There are no known harmful side effects, though results can vary from person to person. If you’re dealing with a serious medical condition, Reiki should be used alongside — not instead of — professional medical care. When choosing a practitioner, look for someone who is trained and certified through a reputable Reiki organisation.
