For foodies, music lovers, sports fans, families, friends and couples, it's a destination ripe for exploration and enjoyment. Here are just some of our favourite things to do and places to stay.
Things to do in Liverpool
This maritime city where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea has both a rich history and a forward-thinking mentality, whether you want to go on a magical mystery Beatles bus tour, party the night away or shop 'til you drop, Liverpool is a tough place to beat.
Liverpool museums and art galleries
Liverpool is brimming with heritage, art and culture, both contemporary and historic. From art galleries to museums the city's tradition of ideation and exploration is on display at the likes of Lady Lever Art Gallery, the World Museum, the Victoria Gallery and Museum and more. A favourite is the former warehouse, Tate Liverpool, which is one of the most impressive art galleries in the UK, located at Albert Dock and providing an opportunity for art lovers to see both exceptional art and architecture at the same time.
Parks and open spaces in Liverpool
Liverpool is both architecturally inspired and brimming with opportunities to enjoy the open air. Explore Festival Gardens - a former household 'tip' located adjacent to the Mersey and transformed into the UK's first ever garden festival in 1984, complete with mix of ornamental gardens from all over the world and the grand centrepiece, Festival Hall. Just outside Liverpool, head to Crosby Beach on the Sefton Coastline, and not only discover sea and sand, but the spectacular 'Another Place' sculptures by artist, Antony Gormley. It's quite the site to behold - 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore and stretching almost one kilometre out to sea. For a moment of open-air beauty in the heart of the city, Sefton Park is 250 acres of green space complete with hidden caves, waterfalls and a Victorian Palm House, all worthy of its Grade I-listed status.
Theatre in Liverpool
Theatre in Liverpool is a real treat, after all, this is the city that's home to the likes of Jason Isaacs, Jodie Comer, Rex Harrison, Cilla Black and more. The Liverpool Empire, Liverpool Playhouse Theatre and Royal Court Theatre as well as the Everyman Theatre are amongst the destinations to enjoy. The theatre and community hub is the Shakespeare North Playhouse. In the Prescot area, it's worth the trip to enjoy plays by Shakespeare as well as contemporary theatre, comedy and other live events.
Live music in Liverpool
You can't go to Liverpool without popping into the legendary nightclub that's hosted illustrious musical heroes including the Beatles, the Hollies, Rolling Stones and the Kinks. The Cavern Club dates back to 1957 when it opened as a jazz and skiffle joint, and then it reopened in 1984, once again a vibrant live music venue. You may just see the next big thing.
Visit the Baltic Triangle
The independent spirit of this city is one of its greatest aspects, and that translates from its theatre and music to its shops and culinary experiences. For example, in an industrial district of warehouses that have been reinvented as the bustling home of start-ups, street food and stunning arts venues, The Baltic Triangle is all independent boutiques, craft brewers and culinary experimentation - Prosecco ice lolly anyone?
