Why it works … Monticelli Mud Wrap

From the waters of Monticelli in Palma, Hotel Verta explains why their mud wrap is the go-to treatment for reducing cellulite the natural way …

What exactly is the treatment?

It’s a 60-minute treatment starting with a full body exfoliation to smooth the skin and allow the product to work better.  Then we apply the warmed Monticelli mud, and wrap clients in a plastic sheet to keep the heat in and push the product further into the skin.  That stays on for 20 minutes while we do a scalp massage or over-the-towel massage.  Then guests shower and we do a massage with anti-cellulite oil all over the body.

Where does it come from?

It is from Italian brand, [Comfort Zone], but the product itself contains thermal waters from Monticelli in Palma.  It contains essential oils of lemon, fennel, and also contains algae.  The thermal waters are rich in sodium bromide and chloride, which are really good for the body - the chloride helps to tone the skin, the algae is full of iron and is particularly good for women.  The lemon just helps to brighten the skin.

What is it supposed to do?

It’s a detoxifying treatment.  The mineral salts help to drain and reduce the appearance of cellulite.  It’s great for water retention around the stomach and ankles, and if you’re feeling sluggish, work in a polluted environment, or drink alcohol regularly.

Is there anything you do to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment?

We add the massage depending on the client’s choice - either a head massage or over-the-towel body massage.  We also add in the [Comfort Zone] welcome ritual, which uses a tranquillity blended oil that clients inhale three times to give a sense of wellbeing that really starts to relax and settle you into the treatment.

Is there anything you recommend clients to do pre or post-treatment to get the most out of it?

We do advise that you avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 hours afterwards to try not to put toxins back into the body.  We recommend relaxing afterwards and having one of our herbal Detox teas to further the treatment.  We also recommend products to carry on the treatment at home.

Is there anyone you particularly recommend the treatment for?

It’s great for women, especially before the summer holidays.  If anyone wants a boost, perhaps you are on a new diet, it’s great to give that extra help.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have this treatment and why?

Anyone who has iodine allergies and anyone who is pregnant, even after the first trimester we don’t recommend it, unlike most treatments.  It is also not advised for anyone who is currently having chemotherapy or is in the initial stages of remission.
