Spring forward: Seasonal wellness for a fresh start

Spring has long been associated with renewal, and now is the time to enjoy that recharged energy. Here are a few spa ways to use the changing seasons as a springboard for a fresh start.

We started the year by talking about the value of leaning into the seasons - taking a cue from Mother Nature, and enjoying the quiet of the seemingly more dormant months before the bloom of spring. Well, with the clocks changing soo, spring is upon us and we're able to peek above the proverbial duvet and into the sunlight.

A favourite book of the last year has been Raising Hare, Chloe Dalton's achingly beautiful meditation on freedom, trust, loss, and our relationship with the natural world, through her unlikely friendship with a wild hare. In one part, she writes:

“We do not achieve all upon which we have set our hearts, or are beaten back by headwinds stronger than our desires, we too can lay up a while, watch the glitter on the grass, and renew our strength.”

Spring has long been associated with renewal, and now is the time to enjoy that recharged energy. As the clocks move forward and daylight stretches into the evening, lots of us find that it's an organic opportunity to refresh our routines and reset our wellbeing, as mind and body work with the seasonal changes.

Here are a few spa ways to use the changing seasons as a springboard for a fresh start.

Resetting the clock: A seasonal opportunity to refresh your routine

The transition into spring is marked by the annual clock change, which shifts daylight patterns and nudges the body’s internal clock out of its usual rhythm. This biological clock—known as the circadian rhythm—regulates sleep, hormones, metabolism, and mood across a roughly 24-hour cycle.

Research shows that even a one-hour shift can temporarily disrupt sleep and daily functioning. Studies suggest people lose an average of about 40 minutes of sleep immediately after the spring clock change, contributing to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

Circadian rhythms depend heavily on environmental cues such as light exposure, meal timing, and activity levels. When these cues shift abruptly, as they do during seasonal transitions, the body needs time to realign.

Rather than viewing the clock change as a disruption, however, it can be reframed as a natural prompt for a routine reset. Spring is an ideal time to:

  • Gradually adjust sleep and wake times
  • Spend more time outdoors in morning light
  • Introduce gentle morning movement such as stretching or walking
  • Review evening habits that may delay sleep, such as late-night screen exposure

These small adjustments reinforce the body’s natural rhythms and help restore energy levels as the season changes. In this sense, the clock change becomes less of an inconvenience and more of a reminder that wellness routines, like the seasons themselves, can benefit from periodic renewal.

Spa rituals for Spring: Body scrubs, bathing rituals, and facials

Seasonal transitions are also an opportunity to refresh the skin and encourage relaxation through restorative spa rituals. Lots of spa treatments are designed to stimulate circulation, remove dead skin cells, and support the skin’s natural renewal process.

For example, body exfoliation rituals are particularly popular during spring. Scrubs work by gently removing dead skin cells while nourishing oils hydrate. These treatments leave the skin brighter and smoother while promoting circulation.

In some spa rituals, exfoliation is paired with massages, wraps, or bathing rituals to create a holistic treatment experience that's invigorating and nurturing. The aromatherapy oils that you choose at this time of year might lean away from the warming soothing scents of winter, and more towards the energising likes of citrus, peppermint, and eucalyptus, with the focus on awakening and invigorating.

These treatments often incorporate several key components:

Body scrubs

Salt, sugar, or botanical scrubs help remove dead skin cells and brighten the complexion. Spa therapists often use circular massage movements to stimulate circulation and reveal softer skin beneath - perfect before heading off on holiday.

Detox baths

Mineral baths are used in some spa rituals to hydrate and soften the skin while encouraging relaxation. These treatments often precede scrubs and massages, to soothe the skin and enhance absorption of nourishing ingredients.

Facials and body wraps

Wraps and facials allow hydrating or nourishing products to penetrate the skin while the body rests in a warm, relaxing environment. This process supports deep hydration and encourages a feeling of rejuvenation.

Beyond the physical effects, spa rituals can also help reduce stress and promote mental calm, which is an important component of overall wellness as we transition into a new season.

Nutritional support for energy after the clocks change

Alongside relaxation and routine adjustments, nutrition plays an important role in helping the body adapt to seasonal changes.

Emerging research suggests diet may influence how easily the body adjusts to shifts in sleep schedules. In one study examining adaptation to daylight saving time, individuals consuming lower-fat diets adjusted more quickly to the time change than those consuming higher-fat diets.

This suggests that nutritional patterns may interact with circadian biology and metabolic health. To support energy levels after the clocks change, you could focus on foods and habits that stabilise energy and support metabolic rhythms:

1. Prioritise balanced meals

Meals containing complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent energy crashes.

2. Emphasise whole, seasonal foods

Seasonal, spring produce, such as leafy greens, asparagus, and berries, provide vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre that support overall metabolic health.

3. Stay hydrated

Hydration is essential for cognitive function and energy levels, especially when sleep patterns are temporarily disrupted.

4. Time meals consistently

Meal timing acts as a cue for the circadian system, so eating at regular times each day can help reinforce the body’s internal clock.

Together, these dietary strategies can help restore energy and maintain focus during the days following the clock change.

A holistic approach to seasonal renewal

The most sustainable approach to seasonal wellness always combines simple adjustments that work together and are a joy to implement. That might be:

  • Resetting daily routines to align with changing daylight (maybe you will decide to get up half an hour earlier now that it's lighter)
  • Supporting the body with restorative spa rituals - even if it's five minutes of deep breathing before you turn your phone on in the morning
  • Nourishing energy levels with balanced nutrition - and perhaps enjoying some of the seasonal produce that's fresh from local farms

Taken together, these practices create a gentle but powerful reset for mind and body, providing a holistic sense of connectivity and alignment with the seasons to help you feel refreshed, energised, and ready for the months ahead.
