Why it works … Thai Foot Massage

A total treat for those hard working feet! The Spa at Barnham Broom explain what’s so special about their Thai foot massage…

What exactly is the Thai foot massage?

After being introduced to your therapist you will be offered a choice of aromatherapy oils before the treatment begins with you lying in the bed cocooned in blankets with a cushion comfortably supporting your head. A bolster is also positioned under your knees for maximum comfort. The therapist then begins with a stretching sequence to loosen the ankle joints and stretch the feet and calf muscles. On a female client we begin working on the left foot as the left side holds the most feminine energy, whereas for a male client we would start with the right foot. After a series of massage moves on dry skin we add the oils and cream and begin working on the feet and lower leg, up to the knee. We incorporate a wooden Thai stick to massage with and stimulate the reflexology points to promote general health and wellbeing. Throughout the treatment the energy lines are worked on to draw up all that wonderful calming and positive energy into the rest of your body. The first foot is then wrapped up tightly in a towel while we work on the second foot. Towards the end pressure points are worked on over the towel wraps and the feet and legs are stretched leaving you feeling energised.

Where does it come from?

Thai foot massage is an ancient technique thought to be around 2000 years old and centered around the belief that the body has 72,000 energy lines all of which run through the feet. For this reason in Thai culture the feet are very special and people believe that by having regular foot massages the energy lines are stimulated to remove stagnant, negative energy and re-invigorate positive energy in the body.

What is it supposed to do?

It rebalances your energy flow while calming the mind and body. This is especially important during times when you are feeling physically or emotionally drained. Or if you are feeling great then it will enhance that feeling.

Is there anything you do to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment?

The lights will be dimmed, the music will be lulling you into a sense of calm helping you drift off and unwind while the aromatic oils fill the room. Bliss!

Is there anything you recommend clients to do pre or post-treatment to get the most out of it?

We recommend arriving early to make the most of your time with us so you can sit and enjoy a drink beforehand. Then afterwards, once you’ve managed to drag yourself off the bed, head into our lounge where you can relax on the sofas and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea.

Is there anyone you particularly recommend the treatment for?

Anyone feeling emotionally or physically drained, or just anyone who loves having their feet massaged as essentially it is a really lovely long foot and lower leg massage! It is also great for anyone with circulation problems or stiff joints.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have this treatment and why?

We would not recommend it during pregnancy because we consider it too stimulating. We also would not perform the treatment if you have any foot infections that might be passed on.
